Introduction

Welcome to my blog! I am Uduakobong Emmanuel, also known as @udyliciouz. I am a Nigerian, and that is also the country of my residence for now.

Today, I will be writing about how democracy functions in my country.

First of all, what is democracy?
Democracy as the case may be can be defined as being the government of the people and by the people. People have the right to choose whom they want as their governor and president and to every other aspect of leadership.

The big question is, is Nigeria really a democratic country?
Let find out.

How is democracy functioning in your country?

Though Nigerians claim to be a democratic country, it is obvious that they do not practice democracy.

From the way a lot of people lament after the just concluded election. It was not the people's choice who was not rulling as the president of the country. A lot of people had their most preferred president, who they casted a lot of votes for him, but the one who has less votes is the person rulling now as the president.

The number of protests that happen after the election is the clear evidence that it is not the people's choice that is now rolling as the president of the country.

Is your country free from any domination ruled?

The answer to the above question is no. Nigeria is not free from domination ruled.

There are three main religious practices in Nigeria. Which are;

  • The Christianity religion
  • The Islamic religion
  • African Traditional Religion

Among the three religious practices, the Christianity religion and Islamic religion are mostly practised.

Those of the Christianity religion also wishes that someone from their religious group be elected as president of the country and same goes to those in the Islamic religion, they also want their members to be elected.

The reality is that almost all the president of Nigeria are people from the Islamic religion.

Is your country self-sufficient in food production?

My country is blessed with good land, and by that, we are supposed to be self-sufficient in food production.

The main occupation in my country, farming, fishing, and forestry.

Nigeria has the record of being the largest oil producing country in Africa.

We also produce food products, which most of them are imported to other countries like rice, palm oil, kennel, and so on.

The bad news is that upon producing a lot of food in the country, we are still in the scarcity of those food items. Nigerian produces rice, but then rice as I speak is very expensive, same with every other thing produced in the country.

We don't have enough of those food in the country.

How is youth employment in your country?

From what I can see, most youth in my country find one thing or the other to do after their graduation from the university. Most youth are into private organisations or better still learn a skill to support themselves from it. Very few youths get employed after school, and that is because they have or know people in government.

When I was a child, I was encouraged to study hard , so I would have good grades and get a better job for myself, but the reverse is the reality now.
Now is to just know people in authority, and then you have a job, just get connected, and that is all. You will have automatic employment after school.

What do you want your country to be like?
  • I want my country to be a democratic country. Election should be free and fair. The people's choice should be the one rulling, not the opposite.

  • I want my country to allow people from different religious 6 to occupy the post of a president. It should not be a denomination ruled country. Let it be free from that so that people from other denominations also benefit from the government.

  • I want the youth in my country to get employed, and the employment strategy should be based on merits. Not employing incompetence workers and those who are fit for the job are looking for menial jobs elsewhere.

  • I want the food produced in my country to reach the common man not importing it, and people in the country are in food scarcity.

Conclusion

Nigerian claims to be a democratic country, but the reverse is the case. Their elections are not free and fair as they claimed.
So many people die in the just concluded election because of a gunshot and some from stray bullets.
Some people were shut to death because they tried protecting the ballot box from election riggers.

I would like to invite @manuelhooks, @eliany, and @goodybest to take part in this engagement challenge.

Democracy is the need of the day. We have too much chaos and tension everywhere in the world. I believe democracy in a true sence can be it's solution. In real democracy the opinion of common masses matters.

Best wishes for the contest.

It is difficult for so many countries to practice true democracy. Some are just covering behind the shield of democracy but they are not practicing it. Thank you for visiting my blog.

Congratulations!
