"Steemit Engagement Challenge S11/W4 - How is democracy functioning in your country?"

in Hindwhale Community11 months ago

Hello @everyone, Welcome to my post, and I trust you're doing well. Today In this post, I have shared how democracy is functioning in Nigeria. I appreciate your time here.

How is democracy functioning in your country?

In Nigeria, we practice a democratic system of government where every qualified Nigerian is expected to vote during the election, which is the process of selecting a leader for office. In other words, democracy is "government by the people and for the people." However, in Nigeria, democracy is no longer functioning well as it did in the past when Nigeria gained independence.

Corruption has taken away the functioning of democracy in Nigeria because politicians have killed Nigeria's democracy. Now in Nigeria, everything is based on who you know. Even the last general election that was held has shown that democracy in Nigeria is dead because millions of Nigerians believe that their mandate was stolen.

Also, as a country that practices democracy, all elected leaders into political office are selected via election across the 36 States of the country. The president is the general overseer of the country, followed by governors, who are overseers of their various states. Having said that, in Nigeria, we have three arms of government, which are the executive, judiciary, and legislature.

Is your country free from any domination?

Yes, in Nigeria, we are free from any domination because we have different political party systems. However, despite the many political parties that we have in Nigeria, it is the All Progressive Congress (APC) that dominates the most in the affairs of government.

The People's Democratic Party (PDP) ruled for 16 years before power was collected from them by the current ruling party, which is the APC. However, during the just concluded general election, power was supposed to be given to the Labour Party (LP) candidate, but because of how corrupt Nigerian democracy has become, the election was rigged, and the matter is still in court today, and everybody's eyes are on the judiciary.

Is your country self-sufficient in food production?

No, ooh, my country Nigeria is not self-sufficient in food production because we still depend on importations of foods like rice, wheat, poultry, and sugar. However, Nigeria is into the production of the aforementioned foods but still prefers importing them into the country because the government is negligent in supporting the local production of foods.

How is youth employment in your country?

Youth employment in Nigeria is nothing to write home about because Nigeria has the highest rate of unemployment since getting a job in Nigeria is now strictly based on connections. Millions of Nigerian youths are roaming around Nigeria's cities looking for jobs. There is a high rate of youth unemployment in Nigeria, which is making Nigerian youths engage in illegal acts all in the name of looking for means of surviving.

What do you want your country to be like?

I want Nigeria to be like other developed countries such as Germany, Canada, the United States, etc. Besides being a developed country, I want things to work perfectly well in Nigeria.

I want Nigeria to be a poverty-free country where everyone is happy and there's a surplus in the country to have. I also would like Nigeria's democracy to be a real democratic system of government where everyone's voice is heard. Finally, I want Nigeria to be a peaceful and understanding country.

Thank you for your wonderful thoughts, indeed you can hope for a better Nigeria where attention will be paid to food production and not consumption.
