Contest: Clean Hands For a Healthy Community
Hello, My dear steemian friends, I hope you are all well. I am also well. Today I am participating in the "Clean Hands For a Healthy Community" competition organized by @alfazmalek, expressing my views.
Handwashing is an effective and cost-effective way to prevent infectious diseases. By setting aside days for handwashing, we are further reminding people of its importance. I have seen national-level programs on the importance of handwashing. I have seen art competitions, school-level programs, and hospital programs for Handwashing Day.
Now let's see how I have implemented hand washing in my daily life,
🔸I have to go to work every day. After coming home, I have a habit of washing my hands first and getting a wash before starting housework. I pay a lot of attention to this because of my two babies.
🔸I wash my hands before and after preparing food, and before and after eating snacks.
🔸Wash your hands even after using the toilet.
🔸I wash my hands after touching pets too.
🔸After touching common surfaces used by the public, we should be careful not to touch our faces, eyes, nose, and mouth until we wash our hands.
🔸Additionally, I wash my hands whenever I feel they are dirty.
Infected people can spread diseases through direct or indirect contact. Handwashing can protect against many other diseases, including diarrhea, typhoid, cholera, respiratory diseases, and eye diseases.

There are various steps to wash your hands properly. They are shown in the image above. Following these steps and washing your hands with soap under running water for at least 20-40 seconds is a good health habit.
Hospital workers must wash their hands between patients. This will help reduce hospital-acquired infections.
In various situations, both washing hands with soap and using disinfectants can be used. Disinfectants remove bacteria and viruses better than soap. But in everyday life, washing hands with soap is enough. In dangerous times like Corona, it is very appropriate to wash hands with soap and then use disinfectants. I think it is appropriate to wash hands with soap and use disinfectants if you come into contact with fluids from an infected person.
I believe that the best group to instill the habit of proper hand washing is school children. Currently, such programs are being implemented in Sri Lanka in conjunction with Handwashing Day. These programs can also be implemented through hospitals. Handouts can be distributed. Handwashing facilities can be provided in public places. Signs showing handwashing images can be installed in public places.
When I was a nursing student, I was involved in programs that taught handwashing to school children. Now I often remind my two little babies to wash their hands before eating and after playing in the sand.
