Steemit Engagement Challenge S11/W6 - “Most Popular Game of My Country: Badminton

in Hindwhale Communitylast year
I am here to participate in the Hindwhale community's sixth week of the "Steemit Engagement Challenge S11W6 - “Most Popular Game of My Country”. I selected badminton and I will give you the facts about why I selected this game.

I know if you ask an Indian about the most popular game in India, 70 out of 100 will answer cricket and then games like hockey, wrestling, and boxing will come after cricket. But for me, as a former badminton player I keep badminton on top of the list and I am sure many Asians from Indonesia, Malaysia, China, and Japan will agree with me. I invite @ridwant, @emsonic and @nadiaturrina if not already participated.

Thanks all for reading my humble effort.

I have played this game up to a higher level therefore, I consider which is a court game played rackets and shuttlecocks as the most popular game in India. I was not able to find a partner for doubles otherwise I could have reached the top Indian double's list, or even participated at the world level in this great racquet sport.

Those who play badminton well take decisions quickly — Dmitry Medvedev

👉 Is that game played in international competitions like the Olympics or other world championships?

Yes, badminton is one of the most popular games among the top world tournaments like Olympics, and other top notch world tournaments including All England, Denis Open, Asian Games and other world tournaments.

Let me tell you that this game of badminton started in England, but it's more famous now in Indonesia, Maleyshia, Japan, China and India. I will give you an idea of the size of the Badminton court's standard Dimensions which stands at 20 ft by 44 ft for doubles but the width gets reduced to 17 feet for singles games, but the length remains the same at 44 feet.

👉 Do you consider that your players are world-class? If yes, name a few of them.

Yes, we have top class players in badminton starting with Nandu Natekar, the famous badminton player. He was one of the most successful badminton players in the history of badminton in India. Natekar had exceptional control of the game, and an outstanding display of stroke-making style and artistry.

We have a number of other great players in badminton including Ashwini Ponnappa, Jwala Gutta.Another prominent and famous Indian badminton player from India is Aparna Popat. Then we have Srikanth Kidambi. This famous Indian badminton player from Andhra Pradesh is currently one of the top badminton players in the world ranking.

To start with I will name Parupalli Kashyap currently the top-ranked Indian male badminton player. He is also the top-ranked Indian badminton player in men's singles.

Saina Nehwal is one of the most famous and renowned Indian badminton players. PV Sindhu is among the current shining stars at world badminton arena. She became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic silver medal, and the 2nd Indian badminton player after Saina Nehwal to win an Olympic medal.

PV Sindhu created history by becoming the first Indian shuttler to win the Badminton World Championships by defeating Japan's Nozomi Okuhara in a one-sided final in Basel, Switzerland in August 2019. PV Sindhu won the first CWG gold medal in women's singles after defeating Michelle Li of Canada in the final of the Birmingham CWG 2022.

In July 2022, this Indian badminton star won the women's singles title at the Singapore Open 2022 BWF Super 500 tournament, defeating Chinese shuttler Wang Ziyi in the final.

Pullela Gopichand's success has one commonality between the ace badminton shuttlers of India - PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal, and that is their coach Pullela Gopichand. This calm yet spirited creature has single-handedly produced some world-class athletes. His best medal was winning the 2001 All England Open Badminton Championship.

Due to several injuries, this famous badminton player who had a great career retired from Indian badminton. Now, Gopichand owns an international badminton academy in Hyderabad, India and coaches top and renowned Indian badminton players under his guidance.

Prakash Padukone is my most favorite player in badminton. He is the top Indian badminton player and the 1st Indian to win the All England Championship title. He was ranked world number-1 in 1980 and in the same year, he became the first Indian to win the All-England Open Badminton Championship.

If we go back a little we see Nandu Natekar who another prominent figure in the history of badminton. He won more than 100 national and international titles during his playing career.

👉 Is your country's favorite game and your country's national game the same or different?

Perhaps you will be surprised to know that there is no national game in India. However, the Indian hockey team is the most successful team in the history of the Olympics. Our team has won eight gold, one silver and three bronze medals.

India has also given some of the best field hockey players to the world, so we all think that hockey is the national game of India but it is not so. Wrestling or Kabaddi are also not the national sports of India. So everyone, according to their own opinion, considers any game their national game. For your information, the Indian team of Kabaddi like Hockey has won all the World Cup events to date and has won seven gold medals in the Asian Games.

And some people consider India's popular cricket as the national game and I am also a fan of it, but if we talk with facts, then there is no national game of India at all. The government has not declared any sport as the national sport of the country, as the aim of the government is to promote all popular sports disciplines."

Finally, badminton is a wonderful game and very popular all over the world. We know badminton as a sport, but very few people know that badminton is not only a game but also an exercise which gives many benefits to the body and I will write about it in detail in my next post.

Even though there is no national game in India like you said, but I believe that Team Hockey has raised your country ahead in the world competition for Hockey sports with 8 medals won.

Not only team Hockey but also wrestling, badminton, TT, boxing, and Kabaddi bring medals regularly. I am confident that Indians are doing much better in last few years compared to what we were doing at the beginning of this century. Thanks for your kind support.

Oh yes ? badminton and some of the ones you mentioned are also the favorites in our country in Indonesia, and! badminton and football are superior there.

It's interesting to learn that our country, India doesn't have a designated national game, yet its historical success in field hockey is truly remarkable. The Indian hockey team's record of eight gold, one silver, and three bronze medals in the Olympics is a testament to their excellence in the sport. India's contributions to field hockey are significant and have left a lasting impact on the world stage.

India is doing far better in javelin, TT, boxing and wrestling besides badminton in recent times. Hockey is a fast game and international federations are changing the rules according to their own teams' strength. Cricket is popular because it has a lot of money involved. Thanks for your feedback and support.
