Steemit Engagement Challenge S11/W6 - “Most Popular Game of My Country-(Football, Volleyball, Basketball, etc)”
The topic of discussion this week dwell on popular sports or games in our country. I will focus my analysis of the topic based on the following guiding questions.
Describe what sports/game is popular most in your country.
In Cameroon, there are several popular sports. These sports included; football ⚽ , handball, volleyball 🏐 , basketball 🏀 , tennis 🎾, etc. Cameroon is a sport-loving nation the reason why several sports/ games are commonly practiced here.
However, the most popular sport that Cameroon has great potential in is football game. This game is one common game that unites us all irrespective of our ethnicity or race.
The football game has produced great football icons in the world from Cameroon origin the likes of Samuel Eto’o Fils, Roger Mila, Rigorbert Song, Andre Onana, etc.
The game is equally used as a means to sell the country's rich cultural values such as our traditional regalia “togu”. The players and fans are dressed in the traditional regalia which is so unique in the outside world.
Is that game played in international competitions like the Olympics or other world championships?
Of course, the football team is a 5 times champion of the Africa Cup of Nations. This shows the level at which the team has talented players.
The team has equally participated in several World Cup jamborees. However, their participation in the World Cup has not produced good results for them to become champions. The only year they participated and reached the quarter-finals was in 1990 in the year of Roger Mila.
The team has equally participated in the Olympic games several times. During one of the Olympic Games, the team was all dressed in the “togu” regalia which made them unique in appearance during the opening day of the competition.
Do you consider that your players are world-class? If yes, name a few of them.
As I earlier said, we are a sport-loving nation and over the years we have produced world-class players in different fields of sports.
In the football team, we have world-class players like Samuel Eto’o Fils. Apart from representing the country in the national team, he played in different world-class teams such as the Barcelona team, Chelsea team, Inter Milan team, etc. His performance over the years has been great and now he is the president of the Cameroon Football Federation.
We also had Andre Onana who is presently playing in the English premier league as goalkeeper of Manchester United. Last season, his performance was so great with the Inter Milan team as their performance during the last Champions League was great.
Last but not least is Francis Nganu the UEFA heavyweight champion. He has flown the colours of the country flag internationally in competitions. The least is long but I chose to go with the few.
Is your country's favorite game and your country's national game the same or different?
As I already said, my country is so much into different sport activities and all the different types of sports have a national team that represents the country's colours in international games.
I will say, all the different types of sports games are favourites and are equally national games. Priority is given to all the disciplines with each having a federation that manages the affairs of the sports activities.
