Chittorgarh's history is enthralling, with tales of battles and bloody sieges. Tales of heroism, bravery, and romance, as well as tales of death and destruction. Legends of Jauhar's queens and aristocratic women sacrificing their lives. These captivating stories have the ability to captivate an eager audience. These stories have been immortalised in ballads and folk songs over the years.

The famed Rajput queen Padmini, also known as Rani Padmavati, is one such folklore that has been around for centuries but has only recently captured the nation's attention. According to legend, the beautiful queen lived in Chittorgarh between the 13th and 14th centuries.

A visit to the Chittorgarh Fort

You can't help but be in awe of the place once you've arrived, It is a magnificent structure that stands atop a 180-meter-high hill and spans approximately 692 acres, providing panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. It holds the distinction of being the country's largest fort. That has to say something about its size and grandeur.

The Chittorgarh Fort is one of eight Rajasthan sites designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. There is no concrete evidence as to who built it, but historians believe it was constructed during the reign of the Mauryan Empire in the 7th century.

The fort's splendour is not limited to its size and dimensions. It is also known for its distinct and well-liked architecture. There are 84 artificially created reservoirs around the fort, and their presence demonstrates the well-thought-out construction in mediaeval times. The water bodies were built in such a way that they could hold enough water to supply a fleet of 50,000 soldiers for four years.

The fort is entered through seven gates, the main one being Ram Pol. The gates were cleverly designed to keep the enemy from entering or attacking the fort. What remains today are ruins, but they paint such a vivid picture of a glorious past.Because not everything has been destroyed or demolished, approximately 65 monuments, primarily palaces, temples, towers, and cenotaphs, remain standing. Among them the most eye-catching structures are the victory towers.

These are some anecdotes; some seemed far-fetched, but legends are a part of people's beliefs. One interesting fact was that the fort was built in one night by Bhim (one of the Pandavas). Another fascinating story was the origin of the name Bhimlat Kund, one of the 84 reservoirs. According to legend, Bhim became thirsty because there was no water on the hilltop. As a result, he struck the ground, and water appeared in that location.

Padmavati was a stunningly beautiful princess who married Raja Ratan Singh, the ruler of Mewar, according to legend. Her stunning beauty led to her being the central character in numerous ballads and narratives. She is the subject of several folktales from the area. Malik Muhammad Jayasi, a Sufi poet, is credited with writing the most famous piece about her. His poem romanticised the legendary queen and imbued her with a mystical aura.

Padmavat, the ballad, reads like a fairytale, with talking parrots extolling the queen's beauty and the drama that unfolded, involving Ratan Singh and Allaudin Khiji and concluding with Padmavat committing Jauhar. It is unknown which parts are true and which are fiction.

Stories of Akbar's siege on Chittorgarh

Rana Uday Singh's son joined forces with the Mughal emperor, only to discover that he intended to conquer Chittorgarh. The son returned to appraise Rana Uday Singh, but the story became hazy from there. Some versions said the Rana won, while others said he escaped...

However, the Vijay Stambh within the fort is proof that a battle was won. It was unclear whether the Rana defeated Akbar's army or Khilji's troupes.

Palaces in Chittorgarh

The Rana Kumbha Palace ruins are hauntingly beautiful. What a magnificent structure it would have been. The panoramic view of the city from here is breathtaking, especially as the sun sets in the distance.

Even though it is abandoned and submerged in a pool of water, Rani Padmini's Palace can capture your attention. In its prime, it would have been heavenly.

Temples in the fort

Given the number of temples within the fort, it appears that people back then were extremely religious. There are several Jain temples in the fort, in addition to other well-known temples like Adbuth Nath Mandir, Kshemankari Mandir, and Kumbh Sham Mandir. The most well-known temple is one dedicated to Mira Bai.

The two victory towers, Vijay Stambh and Kirti Stambh, are the most prominent features of the fort. They are magnificent, towering and majestic, with intricate carvings. In 1448, Rana Kumbha built the Vijay Stambh to commemorate his victory over Allaudin Khiji's army. The Kirti Stambh is older, dating back to the 12th century, and is thought to have been built by a Jain trader. It is a commanding structure, standing 22 metres tall.
