The role of forests in nature and human life
Trees also provide vital oases of shade on the ground. Urban trees help buildings stay cool by reducing the need for electric fans or air conditioners, while large forests perform complex tasks such as containing the heat island effect in a city or regulating local temperatures.
Large forests can influence regional weather patterns and even create their own microclimate. For example, the Amazon creates atmospheric conditions that not only favor regular rainfall on nearby farmlands, but possibly affect the Great Plains of North America.
Forests cover nearly a third of the Earth's land mass, providing vital organic infrastructure for a wide variety of life forms. They support countless species and also provide various benefits to humanity. However, there is a significant decline in forest resources every year , with people primarily responsible for deforestation .
The forests contain a lot of natural medicines. For example, theophylline, which is used to treat asthma, is found in cocoa beans. About 70 percent of all known plants with anti-cancer properties are found only in rainforests.
