Photowalks around Peterhof - The main fountains cascade

Today I continue to talk about my photo walk around Peterhof.

This time I want to pay a little more attention to the main cascade of fountains, which is located directly at the facade of the Grand Peterhof Palace.

I must say that the Peterhof fountains are not just a pleasant addition to this palace and park ensemble. Fountains are one of its most important attractions. And every year after the winter season, these fountains are solemnly opened, and closed in the fall before the cold. This event attracts many tourists.

And this is not surprising, because they simply amaze with their appearance, as well as their history.

It so happened that during the tour my group was taken to technical rooms under the cascade. You see dark windows under the statues. Somewhere there a guide took us.

Unfortunately, it was dark there and my photos were blurry. Therefore, I can’t show you what I saw.

We entered the technical rooms through this gate.

We were shown communications through which water flows to the fountains from the upper lakes. I must say that they are completely unlike modern ones. Large diameter pipes pass through the basements. And you can hear the water rustling over them.

The guide told us that since the creation of this complex engineering system, children have always worked in the staff. They were taken to apprentices and trained. This is due to the fact that in some places the corridors along which the pipes pass are very narrow and an adult cannot simply move along them, not to mention the performance of work.

And this is the only normal shot that I made inside the cellars.

We went outside through the same gate.

Because of the wind, splashes of water began to fly from this fountain as it raised its jets high.

In this photo you can see many drops of water in the air.

It turned out that this excursion to the cellars makes it possible to go much closer to the fountains and photograph them in a way that cannot be done from the rest of the territory.

Which I did. the small fountains around the large bowl of the cascade turned out to be mythological animals of a water theme.

Upon closer inspection, the cascade was decorated with frescoes.

Gilded statues shone brightly in the sun.

And Samson was better seen from here.

In general, although I was not able to take photographs of the technical rooms, I did not regret that I got on this tour and was able to take many photographs of the fountains nearby.

After this tour we went for a walk in the parks. But I will talk about this in my next posts. See you soon!
