The Time Has Arrived .. Or Should I Say Timepiece?!

Time pieces are like little pieces of art ☺️

My New Old Watch Came!!! ..

I was excited to see the mail carrier load the mail into our mail box on Saturday, because I knew one of the pieces of mail contained my new purchase! A 1894 Elgin hunter style pocket watch. After opening it and carefully inspecting it to make sure it was how the seller described it, a new found joy came over me. Given the current state of the world, the misery and suffering we all read and hear about on a daily basis, a distraction such as this is "just what the doctor ordered". well.. okay, maybe not the doctor, but I suppose "just what I ordered" is a better way to describe it. If anything, this watch is BETTER than how the seller described it. Its in AWESOME condition for being 126 years old. I don't think it was used at all in those 126 years, rather it may have sat quietly and tickless in a draw or box for most of them. I wound it up and it began to tic tic tic tic tic.. I set the time and on Sunday morning, the time was spot on! Great time piece!!!

The Movement Cover Dazzled Me ..

One of the things that drew my attention to this piece in the first place, when browsing before purchase, was the design on the interior of the movement cover. As pictured below, it is a series of buff marks that radiate outward from the hinge area. The whole design reminds me of a sea shell. I was pleasantly surprised that there were only a few scratches on this interior plate. Usually this is the first place the get all banged and scratched up.

The Outer Cover ..

I think it is a solid design, that sort of looks like a farm or harvest scene. Busy but not too busy, and not dull enough to loose my attention easily. Again, the wear on both sides is practically non existent.

Here is a side by side photo of the outer case. I wanted to show you this because of one little difference.. Can you spot it?? (besides the difference in color of the pictures)

The picture to the right contains a circular bare area toward the bottom right. This same area on the opposite side contains a farm scene. The farm scene represents the rear of the watch, while the bare area is the side you would open to see the face of the watch. I kept opening the wrong side every time until I realized why the one side was a bit different. haha.

Here is a close up..

I like how you can fold both sides of this watch open, so that you can stand it up and set it on your desk or a bed stand.

The Plan ..

The plan was not to bore you, but rather to let you know that what I was patiently waiting for arrived and that I could not be more pleased with it. I plan on keeping this piece for another 126 years! haha. Okay that's a stretch, but you never know.

On Another Note ..

The Amaryllis flowers were short lived, and are wilting away. The second bloom stem, on the other hand, is growing like crazy! Take a look at how tall it got just in a week, since the last time I posted about it. I would imagine in another week or so it will be blooming and soon after that wilting away too. Wow.. I sound bleak. I guess this is a good time to say farewell then. Until next time obviously.

About Me ~ The Artist

My art work incorporates a wide variety of subject matter, including landscape, seascape, cityscape, and still life images. My works are the product of a continuing process of exploration through which I seek to portray personal and visionary interpretations of my surroundings. My paintings are impressions of places and events from everyday life, an interpretation of my imagination, and personal responses to what I see and feel on a daily basis. More recently I have invested generous amounts of time into my landscape painting. I am surrounded by natural and man made beauty, which inherently presents itself in the tri-state area, and almost demands that I paint it.

Not everything is art. Art is not everything, but it comes close. Art is everywhere and all the time. Art makes you experience the beauty of the world, the people in it, and the places we call home. Art itself is so influential that it can tell stories, show feelings, and express passion or fury. Art exists in addition to language; expression of sensations and thoughts, revealing a way of thinking too subtle and delicate for words.

For me art requires love, honesty and perseverance. In return, it reveals some personal, non-analyzable, and creative untamed passion. For the public, art with its magnificent beauty, improves mood and health and builds better human beings and communities. It engages the intellect, softens the heart, strengthens the soul and frees the spirit.

Sort:

That watch is beautiful!! I had a similar looking watch (Just the shape) and not decorated like that one and also in a silver color, which was given to me by my uncle, I was very sad, when my house was burgled and one of the items stolen was that watch!!

Oh NO!! That is terrible. So Sorry to here that. I love the small details in some of these pocket watches. I actually prefer the silver colored ones.
