Contemporary Sculptures Part 1

Contemporary Sculptures Part 1

Art has the condition sine qua non of being subject to criticism, that is why I am opening new paths in this field of exploration of universal plastic art, I do not pretend to be an art critic, but rather an evaluator or curator of art, this will serve to appreciate and highlight, and point out when it is unequivocal.

Today's theme in this first part will be to analyze contemporary sculpture.

Contemporary sculpture was born out of a need to establish new forms of creation, distancing itself from classical art and other periods where sculpture was limited by a series of extremely expensive materials, for example taking as a reference the Greek sculpture period where they used limestone, marble, bronze, wood, ivory, gold and iron, marble and limestone being the materials preferred by sculptors.

The problem

As marble and limestone were expensive materials, the new generations in the 20th century limited their creativity and sculptural art went into crisis because many artists could not buy these supposedly essential materials to develop artistic projects.

As the industrial age advances, new materials emerge and in turn new sculptor artists choose to use new materials almost all linked to the industrial age, lowering the average price of a sculpture from hundreds of thousands of dollars to hundreds of dollars for the acquisition of plastic.

Productivity

As if it were a war to the death, contemporary artists decide to give free rein to their imagination and use how much material they can find. Different sculptors use paper, cardboard, glass, aluminum, plastic, recycled materials such as sausage cans, plastic bottles, kitchen utensils to name a few.

Review

The fact of using new materials to make sculptures breaking with the canons of the fine arts circles seems to me a true artistic revolution, besides, one should not impose a specific material as something unique to make a work of art.

The problem is that the lack of education and misinterpretation of certain contemporary postulates opened the way for the art world to be invaded with a gigantic production of many sculptures and with it a little mental laziness to create new techniques based on materials, That's how we can find sculptures that are crumpled paper or stained glass like a fish tank, that's when I personally start to question the legacy of contemporary sculptures. I also see many sculptors who don't make their sculptures, they design and put a group to make the work, this is questionable because an artist is supposed to not only be involved with the design and conceptualization of a work but also make it.

Conclusion

Contemporary sculptures must always be reviewed for their proper healing, and by this I mean even if there is something similar that is from another artist or simply if the sculptor makes works that are identical, we should not fall into the same mistake of always saying that each artist develops his personal style, one thing is to create an identity and another is to be repetitive and constant with a design that does not vary.
