Club 100 // Contest // Steem Plants Week 46 - Colorful Elephant Ears

in SteemitContestlast year (edited)

Welcome plant lovers. Let us be thankful for another week of this wonderful challenge, Steem Plants Contest Week 46, hosted by @strawberrry. Check out the contest post with the rules here. Read up, join us and invite other friends in this contest.

Last week my wife and I went to a supermarket here in our city located in a shopping mall called JS Gaisano. I was surprised to find out that the supermarket also had a plant and flower section. Most of the plants on display were succulents and cacti but there were some with colorful leaves with intricate designs. One of them is this one.

I looked it up in the internet and this is what I found.

Caladium is a genus of flowering plants in the family Araceae. They are often known by the common name Elephant Ear (which they share with the closely related genera Alocasia, Colocasia, and Xanthosoma), Heart of Jesus, and Angel Wings. There are over 1000 named cultivars of Caladium bicolor from the original South American plant. The genus Caladium includes seven species that are native to South America and Central America, and naturalized in India, parts of Africa, and various tropical islands. They grow in open areas of the forest and on the banks of rivers and go dormant during the dry season. The wild plants grow to 15–35 inches (40–90 cm) tall, with leaves mostly 6-18 inches (15–45 cm) long and broad. Wikipedia

The leaves do look like ears of elephants. And the pattern is quite unique and colorful. I also found out that it is quite expensive. Below is a photo of the plant with the price tag.

The price tag reveals that this particular plant was grown by an outfit called Bemwa Farms which is located in the outskirts of our city, about 85 kilometers away. This farm is famous for their production of lettuce and other plants with exotic and beautiful species. The price of this particular plant is also a whopping P899 or roughly US Dollar 18. Will you buy it?

And that's all for now. Hope you liked it. Good luck to all participants. Please keep safe and may peace be with you all. Inviting @davidesimoncini, @nelinoeva and @elizacheng to join in this fun contest.
