Microsoft Makes It Easy To Change The Automatic Browser Windows 11, Here's How It Works

in Project HOPE3 years ago

While Windows 11 comes with acceptable changes, including new design, Android app support, and more, there is one annoying problem.

It has unnecessarily complicated the process of changing the default browser without Microsoft Edge. Instead of simply modifying it using Settings (available on Windows 10), people are required to change the file and connection types.

Yes, Microsoft is making the one-click process a multi-click process, with many steps in hopes of improving access to its Edge browser. This process is now expected to be a lot easier, as Microsoft is testing the dedicated button to change the default Windows 11 browser.

Windows 11 will reportedly have a “Set Default” button at the top of the application settings page. It will be available under the Applications section>> Default Settings for Settings.

The option will allow users to set their favorite automated apps with a simple click. The new capability is available for Windows 11 Build Insider 22509 in the Dev channel. It was first spotted by retiring engineer Rafael Rivera.

If the application is set to default, file and link types (HTM, HTML, SHTML, SVG, WEBP, XHT, XHTML, FTP, HTTP, and HTTPS) will be automatically set to the new application as default. However, the PDF file type will still have Edge as its default browser.

This feature will be a relief for many as the current process is very complicated. If a user wants to change their default browser (or any other application), they will need to go to Settings, select Apps, and then Default Apps. To follow this, users will need to enter the browser name in the Search Settings section and select that browser for each file/link type.

This change has attracted a negative impact on both third-party Windows browsers (Vivaldi, Firefox, and Brave, to name a few) and regular users.

Also, it is much harder than it used to be in Windows 10. Remember, when you download an app or browser on Windows 10, only one piece of information appears for people to set as default. If the information is missed, they can head to Settings.

It remains to be seen when Microsoft plans to release the update to regular users. We also do not know whether the default browser widget exists or whether Windows 11 will be launched.

For you to remember, Windows Insider Build 22509 also brings changes to the Start Menu, which will allow users to add pinned applications to the Start Menu. The Taskbar now also shows the date and clock in the second monitor.
