Coal-fired power generation increased by 16.1 percent to 594.4 billion units (BU) in April-October this year in the same period last year, Parliament was notified on Tuesday.

Coal-fired power generation was recorded at 511.9 BU at the same time last year, Union Energy Minister R K Singh said in a written reply to Rajya Sabha.

According to the House's response, coal-fired power generation stood at 565.8 BU in April-October 2019.

The minister explained, "In 2020-21, power generation was affected due to low demand during the Covid-19 violence. In 2021-22, April-October 2021, electricity production increased over the past two years."

The minister responded to the question "whether the power generation has been affected by the shortage of coal".

The Minister also informed the House that according to data compiled by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), the average sale of electricity for coal-fired power in 2019-2020 was almost Rs 3.97 / kWh compared to Rs 3.84 / kWh at the time. 2018-19, an increase of about 3.4 percent.

In another reply, the minister indicated that there was a 0.5% shortage of electricity or 3,889 million units (MU) from April to October this year.

The total energy supply for April-October this year was 8,17,816 MU against the energy requirement of 8,21,705 MU.

The minister went on to say, "There is enough electricity in the country to meet the demand for electricity for all consumers. The capacity to generate almost 391 GW is enough to meet the maximum demand of 200 GW so far."

India added 2,333 MW of coal-fired power generation from April to October this year including 2,120 MW of thermal power and 213 MW of hydropower.

The total amount of conventional power generation capacity was 5,436.15 MW in 2020-21 and 7,065 MW in 2019-20.
