It's unfortunate that most times, poor leaders demand high standards from their subordinates, but they themselves don't hold themselves at such high standards. And this is so obvious to the subordinates, that it's difficult for them to feel led appropriately.

Whenever the leader himself is shying away from difficult tasks, and passing it to someone else, people are observing. And soon enough, they'd start to feel that disconnect between themselves and the leader. And they'd feel as though he cannot understand them.

This reason for this common complain amongst subordinates is because they feel that if only he knew how difficult the task was, he'd not be demanding so much of them. But imagine a different scenario, where the leader himself is more capable than his subordinates.

Say for example, he completes a presumably difficult tasks faster than any of his subordinates. At such a moment, he can demand more efforts from them, and even they can see that he's actually good at this, in the most practical sense.

Hence naturally, people will feel obliged to follow a leader who knows his work, and does it extraordinarily well. Thus, it's important to lead by example, and showing your subordinates how incredibly capable you are; instead of leading them without being an example.
