Maritime transport is the backbone of international trade, with approximately 90% of the world's goods transported by ship. Ships can carry large volumes of cargo at relatively low unit costs and can connect virtually every corner of the planet.

El transporte marítimo es la columna vertebral del comercio internacional, no en vano aproximadamente el 90% de la mercancía a nivel mundial se transporta por barco. Los barcos pueden transportar grandes volúmenes de carga a costos relativamente bajos por unidad y pueden conecta prácticamente todos los rincones del planeta.

But shipping also contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for around three percent of these emissions worldwide, making it a major enemy in the fight against climate change and, therefore, new alternative fuels are continually being sought.

Along these lines, the University of Miami has developed a rather innovative technology in the field of maritime propulsion. These are giant cylindrical sails that would be installed on the decks of cargo ships, which would function as a kind of "giant fans" that would generate thrust by sucking, pressurizing and expelling air in different directions.

En esta línea la Universidad de Miami ha desarrollado una tecnología bastante innovadora en el ámbito de la propulsión marítima. Se trata de velas cilíndricas gigantes que se instalarían en las cubiertas de los barcos de carga, que funcionarían como una especie de "ventiladores gigantes" que generarían empuje al succionar, presurizar y expulsar aire en diferentes direcciones.

These are not the first sails of this type for boats to be invented but, unlike other technologies, cylindrical sails generate thrust even in low wind conditions, making them more efficient than other traditional sails that require stronger winds to operate effectively, and their cylindrical shape increases the surface area exposed to the wind.

Estas no son las primeras velas de este tipo para embarcaciones que se inventan pero, a diferencia de otras tecnologías, las velas cilíndricas, generan empuje incluso en condiciones de viento bajo, lo que las hace más eficientes que otras velas tradicionales que requieren vientos más fuertes para operar de manera efectiva, además de que su forma cilíndrica aumenta la superficie expuesta al viento.

The cylindrical shape and rotation of the sails minimize aerodynamic drag, resulting in lower energy consumption and higher boat speed. In addition, these cylindrical sails can be deployed and retracted quickly and easily, making them easy to use in different conditions and types of boats.

La forma cilíndrica y la rotación de las velas minimizan la resistencia aerodinámica, lo que se traduce en un menor consumo energético y una mayor velocidad del barco, además estas velas cilíndricas pueden desplegarse y recogerse de manera rápida y sencilla, lo que facilita su uso en diferentes condiciones y tipos de embarcaciones.

Unfortunately, although the results obtained so far are very encouraging, there is still a long way to go before these sails can be commercialized on a large scale. More tests are needed in real conditions to evaluate their performance and durability, but there is no doubt that they could revolutionize maritime transport.

Lamentablemente, aunque los resultados obtenidos hasta el momento son muy alentadores, aún queda un largo camino por recorrer antes de que estas velas puedan comercializarse a gran escala, se necesitan realizar más pruebas en condiciones reales para evaluar su rendimiento y durabilidad pero no cabe duda que podría revolucionar el transporte marítimo.
