Surely we would all like to be able to walk through the dark without tripping or being seen, but for now this not only means wearing a cumbersome helmet weighing almost a kilogram but we would also have to pay hundreds of euros, which is why these devices are restricted to military personnel and some hunters, but this can all change.

Seguro que a todos nos gustaría poder caminar por la oscuridad sin tropezar y sin ser vistos, pero esto por ahora no solo implica llevar un aparatoso casco de casi un kilogramo de peso sino que además tendríamos que pagar cientos de euros, por eso estos equipos están restringidos a personal militar y algunos cazadores, pero todo esto puede cambiar.

A group of researchers from the Center of Excellence for Transformative Meta-Optical Systems (TMOS) have carried out a study on what they have called “infrared nonlinear upconversion technology”, in which they propose a night vision technology that could work using much lighter devices.

In conventional night vision systems, an objective lens gathers photons from the environment that are channeled through a photocathode that transforms them into electrons, the electrons subsequently pass through a phosphor plate where they are converted back into photons and recompose the scene in green and black tones.

En los sistemas convencionales de visión nocturna un lente objetivo reúne los fotones del ambiente que son canalizados a través de un fotocátodo que los transforma en electrones, posteriormente los electrones pasan a través de una placa de fósforo donde vuelven a convertirse en fotones y recomponen la escena en tonos verdes y negros.

With the new system, instead of using so many elements to convert photons to electrons and vice versa, they use a metasurface that increases the energy of the photons and attracts them towards the visible light spectrum, saving the step of converting electrons and photons, using a material called lithium niobate that is used in optics and photonics applications.

With this, night vision filters could be created that weigh less than a gram and that can be adapted like a film on a pair of traditional glasses, which would allow the user to see the visible and infrared spectrum at the same time without having to wear a one kilogram device strapped to the head.

Con esto podrían crearse filtros de visión nocturna que pesen menos de un gramo y que se puedan adaptar como una película sobre un par de gafas tradicionales, que permitirian al usuario ver el espectro visible e infrarrojo al mismo tiempo sin tener la necesidad de llevar un aparatoso dispositivo de un kilo amarrado a la cabeza.

A device with these characteristics could not only be useful to the military like conventional ones, but we could all use it to drive safer in the dark, work in places with poor lighting or simply take long night walks without tripping over the environment.

Un dispositivo de estas características no solo podría ser util a los militares como los convencionales sino que todos podríamos utilizarlo para tener una conducción más segura en la oscuridad, trabajar en lugares con una iluminación deficiente o simplemente dar largas caminatas nocturnas sin tropezar con el entorno.
