The last universal common ancestor of all life on Earth is known as LUCA (Last Ultimate Common Ancestor), a species of prokaryotic cell from which all life on Earth is believed to have emerged, from bacteria to humans that, until now, it was thought to have emerged about four billion years ago.

Se conoce como LUCA (Last Ultimate Common Ancestor) al último ancestro universal común de toda la vida en la Tierra, una especie de bacteria procariota de la que se cree que surgió toda la vida en la Tierra, desde las bacterias hasta los seres humanos que, hasta ahora, se pensaba que había surgido hace unos cuatro mil millones de años.

The news is that now an international group of scientists have estimated that LUCA would have appeared two hundred million years earlier, just four hundred million years after the Earth was formed, according to scientists, about four thousand six hundred million years ago, in between of the geological hell known as the Hadean Eon.

La noticia es que ahora un grupo de científicos internacional han estimado que LUCA habría aparecido doscientos millones de años antes, apenas cuatrocientos millones de años después de que la Tierra se formase hace, según los científicos, unos cuatro mil seiscientos millones de años, en medio del infierno geológico conocido como Eón Hadeico.

To make this correction to the birth of LUCA, the researchers relied on a detailed analysis of phylogenetic trees, which represent the evolutionary relationships between different species, by comparing genetic mutation rates in different organisms they were able to determine when their lineages diverged from a common ancestor.

This study raises new questions about the origin of life, suggests that the first forms of life were much simpler than previously thought and that the evolution of complex life was a much slower and more gradual process, billions of years until the explosion of multicellular organisms in the Cambrian period.

Furthermore, this study also suggests that, if this primitive organism was able to evolve in the conditions that the Earth was four billion two hundred million years ago, it means that life is much more resistant than we had imagined, which increases the possibility of finding life on other planets with extreme conditions.

Overall, this new study is a significant advance in our understanding of the origins of life on Earth, but knowing LUCA does not mean that scientists understand how it evolved into a complex creature, so it still remains to be seen. They still have a lot to study to better understand where we come from.

En general, este nuevo estudio es un avance significativo en nuestra comprensión de los orígenes de la vida en la Tierra pero, conocer a LUCA no implica que los científicos entiendan como se produjo la evolución de éste has convertirse en una criatura compleja, así que todavía les queda mucho que estudiar para comprender mejor de donde venimos.
