The world has gone digital, and traditional security means are becoming obsolete. CCTVs, metal detectors and security guards are employed to ensure physical security, but we live in a digital world now. Due to this, most people are pulling their resources to ensure the security of their systems and online information. In that vein, the cryptocurrency built on the blockchain is a target to hackers, and most hackers' targets are usually the wallets of unsuspecting crypto users.

Lots of crypto hacks and scandals are still a thing today. Security remains a big issue, and there is no denying that it will continue to be a significant concern as hackers and thieves are also dynamic. hackers keep trying to find new ways to steal hard-earned money from people, which is why security will always be discussed.

As someone who has lost big and has suffered at the hands of fraudsters, I must say that I have learnt a thing or two about ensuring that cryptos in your wallet are secured. Alongside that, my job as an information security Analyst has further opened my eyes to numerous ways to ensure the safety of coins. ways to increase the safety of coins in your wallet will be discussed below.

  • Save your passphrase offline as against saving it online. Information and data saved online could be stolen as hackers could gain access to this information and use it to their advantage. It is a regular practice for most users to store their crypto wallet passphrase on their one drive, emails draft, one drive and other digital platforms, and that's a mistake that should be avoided going forward. Hackers could hack your emails, steal your keys and do away with your crypto; nothing can be done about that.
To prevent this occurrence, write down your passphrase on a sheet of paper or a diary or a book and store it offline. This way, the risks of this information being stolen offline are mitigated. Another way is saving your passphrase in a word document and moving that document into an external flash drive which would never be connected to the internet.

  • Always ensure to use a strong password on your mobile devices. Most users have crypto wallets on their mobile devices, such as smartphones, laptops and other gadgets. Thieves could steal this gadget, which could lead to these thieves' access to your crypto wallet on your mobile devices. This is why it is advisable for all users to use strong passwords which can not be easily guessable on their devices. This way, even if your mobile device is stolen, the best the thief could do is to flash the devices, which makes all information on the devices automatically deleted and, in a way, ensure that your cryptos are safe in your wallet. The best password parameters to use are a combination of letters, numbers and symbols/.

  • Always activate a two multi-factor authentication layer whenever it is provided. MFA is one way to provide an extra layer of security to your crypto wallet. Centralised wallets provided by exchanges primarily provide this. The good thing about this is that; you will not need to write down a 64-character passphrase. However, you can use a one-time extra password which could be sent to your Authentication app, token, phone or email address. This one-time password will be sent to you after you have applied your ID and password to an account. MFA is great, and the option should be enabled when it arises.
