RE: 7 Habits of Highly Effective People - Habit Five
However, other people have different experiences and their perception of the same thing is different.
Yes! We can't always think the same way. The way you see things will surely be different from the way I see things. What really matter most is our level of understanding when dealing with such problems.
Be critical of yourself in the conversations you have at work or at home. At which level are you really listening?
Sincerely, I do apply all listening techniques you listed depending on the type of person I'm conversing with. There are times I'm selective when the person isn't trust worthy but saying the right thing, there are times I ignore if I notice that you aren't worth my time or your conversation isn't productive, there are times I pretend just to avoid making you feel offended, there are times I'm attentive if it has to do with adding value to my life or career and there are times I am empathetic due to my nature of empathy.

Thank you @hardaeborla for your comment. I think we all listen at different levels. Sometimes when I am watching a movie, I am so focused, I don't really listen to what people are saying to me but I might answer. You can say this is a type of pretending as I try to give the impression I am listening. It is a bad habit - I know.
If we want to be effective, we need to master empathetic hearing and it is not easy to achieve. It does take dedication and practice.
