HOW TO DETERMINE YOUR POSITION ON A MAP

in Project HOPE3 years ago (edited)

Dear Steemit

Moving from point A to point B on a map is not so difficult if we know the azimuth of point B and, accordingly, our position on the map - point A. What if we get lost? It will be easiest to use GPS (as we know almost all modern mobile phones have one), but if we do not have one on hand, then a compass and a map would work for us to determine the intersection of three leading objects.

Never go to an unfamiliar area if you do not have a map of the area and do not have a compass at hand. This can cost you your life.

If you do not have a compass, in the article How to find the azimuth of an object. we have given tips on how to navigate, so you can try this way.

The first step in calculating your position on the map is to look around and select three objects that are your poison points so that you can more easily draw a conclusion about your position. It is best to look for three peaks or a bend in a river to guide you. They are much easier to find on the map and give you valuable information about your location. Start with the first point you choose and determine the azimuth? as shown in the above article. After doing this, draw a line with a pencil that is just below the azimuth angle of the object and the north of the map (If you have a protractor it will be much easier, but the compass can easily give you the right angle after applying it In the map).

Repeat this for the other two points you have chosen as leaders. The intersection of the three lines determined by the azimuths of the objects will show almost absolutely exactly your location on the map (you can see it in the attached picture).

Depending on how accurately you have made the measurements and drawn the lines, there is a possibility that you have made a mistake in determining your position. To be completely sure of its exact determination, repeat and check your measurements several times.

If the lines you have made intersect at the top and you are in a valley, it is obvious that you have made a mistake and you should try to determine your position again.

Greetings @genx-minero undoubtedly technology always makes life easier and the use of GPS is a way to locate places that we did not know its location, now the difficult thing is to assume its orientation where Internet signals are poor and access to the data that this equipment provides us are limited, under these conditions the technology seems to become null and more than a help can become frustration for users.

Good reading.

Hello @genx-miner,
your post reminded me that many years ago I traveled in my country without the use of a GPS (I didn't have one) and I was only oriented by the name of the streets, highways and some landmarks. Now I have a GPS, I get lost more easily than before, hehehe

But I really liked you find these fascinating data in your post, it is very important information that we must take into account.

Great post.

Greetings @ genx-minero
Undoubtedly some that have the technological elements to locate the position where we are has come a long way, with these applications is very simple, but with the old alternative of the map, compass and rulers, I'm sure we can also determine the exact location, of course in a longer time, the important thing is that we can have all these elements to determine the location we want. As well as the distance from point A to point B.
Thank you very much for sharing

It is important for us to know how to find out position on map because it will give us this confidence and reduce the anxiety that comes with us losing our direction or when we are traveling to a place we are not that sure of the road.

Hi @genx-minero, thanks for sharing with us such valuable information. Well if I'm honest I'm not very good at reading maps, much less locating myself on them. Also, that is something essential that we should all learn in our lives, because at some point we may need it. Greetings

Hey buddy,
Being able to interpret a map is more efficient than holding the map, thanks for the quick guideline on how reading and translating a map can become a lot easier.
