Depression at work

The relationship between depression and work life is becoming more apparent every day.

Hi, nice to say hello to you. I haven't written anything about depression in a while. This time I want to address the topic of depression at work. When I studied personnel management, my thesis was about it. Especially about creating an emotional intelligence training program apart from an employee support program.
Experts and statistics agree that depression is increasingly playing a role in the lives of many people who work for companies or even on their own. Although work is not the main cause of emotional disturbance and does not necessarily lead to depression, it can promote or enhance depressive states. It must be taken into account that in the same working conditions some people get depressed and others do not, so we cannot speak of 'a clear work pathology', according to psychologist Santiago Gonzalez.

The truth is that job insecurity, stress exhaustion or frustration, are work factors that can generate anxiety reactions that, if the person is vulnerable, can end in depression.

This disease is accessed by several ways, according to José Luis González de Rivera, Professor of Psychiatry. I present you some of the most common ones:

By chronic stress (excessive demands at work) and by acute stress, which is linked to the obligation to complete tasks with deadlines. The latter type of fatigue particularly affects professionals such as lawyers and journalists.

From frustration, 'wanting to achieve something and not achieving it. Disillusionment can lead to a loss of consideration and a state of depression. People often need an intangible reward: to have their merits recognized.

Burn out or burnout syndrome,. This mostly affects people who work in direct contact with the public, such as healthcare professionals, teachers, salespeople or police officers. The person becomes exhausted and disinterested in their work and in treating others well and that in turn, generates guilt.

Psychological mistreatment or mobbing. Mistreatment, insults, abuse, harassment of all kinds. Indifference, invisibilization and others make the worker feel uncomfortable, affect their self-esteem and no longer want to go to work and therefore their performance is affected.

The psychologist Juan Carlos Fernández Arias, assures that in many of these situations 'if a good preventive management is not done, adaptive disorders end up being generated'. In his opinion, 'the adaptive disorder is a pathology with a reaction of anxiety and depression very common in the workplace, and has more to do with socio-environmental variables than with genetics'.

Is there hope for a depressed or stressed worker?

Definitely yes. I have already mentioned this in my writings or forum chats. Over 80% of people with clinical depression can be successfully treated. The key to recovery is that their symptoms are recognized early and that they receive the treatment they need. Although sometimes the bosses or the work environment itself are the cause of depression in the worker, it should also be noted that many companies are helping their employees with depression by offering their supervisors training on depressive illnesses. In addition, access to employee assistance programs (EAP), such as the one I mentioned at the beginning, and access to occupational health personnel contribute to significant reductions in lost time and work-related accidents, as well as marked increases in productivity.

Depression is preventable, treatable and surmountable. Never forget that.

Dear @garybilbao

It has been brought to my attention by one of PH leaders, that this post has been plagiarized.

Could you please let me know if this is 100% your own content?

Cheers, Piotr

I must admit that I am surprised by this as I have never been accused of plagiarism. Even so, I recognize that I had this material stored in my computer for many years as part of the material I collect and prepare for my personal project on depression. I did not remember if the material was adapted or my own (although I know it was not 100% original and unpublished on my part), but I was not sure if it was a composition of mine based on previously consulted material or materials.

I repeat, this article has a long time among my files on my computer/cloud, so I was not sure of its authorship.

I apologize to the entire Project Hope community and to Steemit in general. If you check my history both here and on Hive.blog, you can see that everything I publish is my own, either unpublished or published by me in some other network. Something that is certainly not the case here.

Please mute this publication and take appropriate action in this regard.

I am very ashamed of what is happening to me. I am a staunch advocate of anti-plagiarism. In fact, I already have a post published here about it.

This serves as a lesson for me with other articles I have in my backlog.

Hi @garybilbao, this is a problem, I see you have published this same post in HIVE, and we have supported it from Project Hope, which could put us again in the eye of some people who have done their best to get us out of Hive. And it's something that I'm particularly concerned about for the community.
And supporting publications like these that are obvious plagiarism is not well seen anywhere.

It is a bit confusing to say that this research was done as a product of the graduate thesis, because while it is true that we can cite some sources from which we get some information, in this case it is different, it is a literal copy, with a few lines that you have added.

@crypto.piotr does not speak or read Spanish, so I guess he does not see exactly the fidelity in the copy and some paraphrased phrases, however, I do speak it, and luckily I have a good understanding of English too, which allows me to realize other things.

I understand your point very well and the last thing I want is to harm the community. When I join Project Hope and I see their no plagiarism policy, I really liked it, because I repeat, I hate plagiarism; plus they allowed to publish OWN content that has been published elsewhere (we know well that some in Steemit and Hive demand exclusivity and unpublished content).

Still, to explain concretely what happened is very complicated with text. What I can do is to insist on my track record on both platforms. All content is my own creation and when I have used other sources I cite them accordingly. I have never been accused of plagiarism and this has even prompted me to write a post clarifying the situation, since beyond the monetary aspect, what really matters to me is not to lose my credibility and the trust others have in me. I have even thought about how to renounce to the rewards in Hive.

I could look for explanations, and I know I have them, even so, I prefer to admit my guilt without excuses and make myself available to what they decide in PH. I hope you can give me another chance (although I am aware that you will not see me the same from now on), but as I am sure of my integrity and that I am a creator and not a copier of content, I trust that I will gain your trust again and this incident will remain in the album of bad memories.

I remain attentive to your questions, comments and decisions.
