Power Vs Competence

I read a book by Jordan Peterson about the hierarchical foundations that exist in life.

He explained about among lobsters that are certain criteria that determine which lobster becomes dominant. Typically being a dominant lobster would mean that the lobster would have the best of every interaction with its environment, including the gene pool that would continue to exist.

Because lesser animals have not evolved this sense of organization as humans have, their hierarchies are mostly predicated on what would seem like a power tussle. Jordan tried to explain that the fights of the lobsters usually are a physical manifestation of chemical interplay in the brain of these little creatures.

When a lobster loses a fight it secretes less serotonin and this can lead to the lobster exhibiting physical characteristics of a lesser lobster. Bending its back more and therefore looking less threatening.

In the human population serotonin is the main chemical found missing in some of those that are depressed. That is why medication given to patients contains active constituents that block a receptor that causes the reuptake of Seratonin.

More in human population

One area in life that the two (Power and Competence) meet and is so evident in politics. Politics in most western countries appear to be more for competence, at least on the surface...than power.

It appears that both parties are typically equally powerful and campaigns that are successful and win, win the heart of the people with competence, than power.

In the African populace, however, this is not the case. Usually, there is a bigger bully who typically can out-kill, steal and destroy. This is why African countries are where they are today and we are backward.

What can be done?

If we could acknowledge there is a problem...that would be good. But those higher up have to be the ones to recognize it or else nothing will change.

I have to commend the governor of Lagos state in his efforts to point out the evil that was done last year during the #endsars protest. We need more people to step up or else nothing will change.

PEACE!!
