Exploring the Deep Sea | The Last Frontier
The deep sea is one among the most unexplored territories on planet earth. It comprises over 60% of the global terrain and holds many undiscovered species and quite diverse habitats. New methods like remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and self-propelled unmanned first submerged vehicles are now opening up new frontiers of investigation.
Thus, such explorations opened up possibilities to find bioluminescent organisms, communities living near hydrothermal vents, and deep-sea corals that radically change the existing notions of life on the planet. Studying these ecosystems increases our understanding of the various types of species’ diversification as well as the information about the emergence of life and possible uses in various fields of biotechnology.
However, knowing how the deep sea helps in the sequestration of excess carbon and the regulation of climate is significant in combating climate change. Similarly as we still explore the last frontiers of space so deep sea continues to hold potential of producing the geophysical data that might dramatically change how we view the Earth.
