Thediarygame| betterlife: Martyrs Day; 3rd June 2021
Good morning Steemians!
Hope your day started out as great as mine did. Today's Martyrs' Day and though we woke up later than planned, we had to start our day.
We set up to have our breakfast at 10 am. It was a simple one because there was still a lot to do during the day, we could not afford to dally. I still had my dissertation type up and I carried work home so that also had to be done...oh and house chores too. 😒
And as much as there was all of that to deal with, I still wanted to enjoy the Martyrs' day celebrations live.
Let me give a brief history on this day, at least the little I remember from our school trip to the Namugongo Shrine. Kabaka Mwanga(Kabaka is the title of the King of the people of Buganda) had started feeling threatened by the presence of foreign missionaries and thought that they would try to usurp the throne. He had them expelled from the kingdom and demanded that the newly converted Christians denounce their faith or face execution. Between 1885 and 1887, 22 Catholic and 23 Anglican converts were executed.😢
On 3rd June, 1886, 32 young men were burned to death for refusing to denounce Christianity. These were both Catholic and Anglican converts. The event took place in Namugongo at what is now known as the Namugongo Shrine.
The actions of the Kabaka is what prompted a revolution that led to the overthrow of Kabaka Mwanga in 1888. He was later reinstated in exchange of his power over the people but again deposed shortly before the British East Africa Company took control over the protectorate Uganda (I am a bit of a history fan).😁
Well, the faith of these brave people is what started off the celebration of the saints who are acknowledged as the Uganda Martyrs. A quick question though, Would you sacrifice yourself for what you truly believe in, even to the point of death? We were just about 9 or 10 years old when they asked us that. Right now, I believe I can answer the question. Can you?
I hope you enjoy the rest of the day. I plan on finishing up my work and then catching up on sleep. Until later.
