Food Sharing #161 - Fukuroya 鐘つき最中 @ Kawagoe, Japan

Hi Everyone,

One of the highlights when visiting Kawagoe is visiting the Bell Tower. Before we go into the bell tower, we found a nice dessert place called Fukuroya 鐘つき最中 which sells nice cakes with symbols of the Bell Tower. It is a small store in which they sell small cakes downstairs and if you want to sit down to have the cakes and tea there, there is upstairs. We decided to get a small cake and try it so we can continue walking and sightseeing rather than spend timing sitting around.

There are options in the store to buy gift boxes or individually wrapped desserts. Most of them have red bean in the middle as filling with a few are like biscuits. Their store best seller is the cakes with the Bell Tower looks with red bean filled inside. They aren’t cheap with the cheapest box at 1658 yen + tax for 10 pieces with the most expensive with 16 at 2635 yen + tax. We had no intention of buying a bag so we bought a single one for 250yen (if I remembered correctly) just to try. They tasted just like the normal red bean cake we are used to eating but just in a bell shape. It is the novelty of having something of a bell shape as we are in that area for this site.

If you don’t want to have your cake in the bell shape, you can always buy the traditional round cakes with the red bean filling which is equally as good. They are sold at 232 yen + tax each so it would come handy as a nice snack to eat while exploring the town. They were pretty busy so be sure to have a good look at what you want before lining up to pay at the counter.
