Every day!! I was one of those that never made use of the bid bots, but earned what little I have the hard way. But, you can earn if you don't have a following and you won't get a following bellyaching about not making any money.
It all comes down to expectations. Do I want anything out of this. Well, I would be a liar if I said it didn't matter. But, I also know that you have to be a part of your investment and as you said, the investment of time is a big one. So many people are disappointed that steem is in the toilet, but, how many of them are out there, commenting and engaging and working with new people to make them productive members of Steemit?
Am I wasting my time? Well, to be honest, I have met some pretty cool people on here so even if I lose everything, which is possible, but, not probable, I 'll have that.

Definitely. And then, we are driven by incentives. If we do not know what we are looking for, we tend to act on autopilot and that is more often than not, average. The incentives that drive us on autopilot haven't likely got us to where we want to be, which is why we are probably looking for an alternative to begin with.
Yep, and even at zero value, there is an inbuilt game on Steem that doesn't exist on other medias, and earning tokens is always fun, which is why pretty much every game utilizes them.
