In earlier years in football, there was no penalty for doing different things, for instance taking the football with your hands if you were not the goalkeeper. And you could also do other stupid things, for example kicking down an opponent nearby the goal! These things were the origin of the penalty!

The greatest event in Norwegian sports history, is when the national football team for men in Norway had beaten Brazil 2-1 in the World Championship in football in 1998, and they did it in Marseille. And Norway got a penalty when it was 1-1, and Kjetil Rekdal placed the football in goal, and this was really marvellous for the little country called for Norway – the way in north!

We see these penalties today, in the newspapers and in the TV. But how did these things really start? The main thing was that players did something on the field that was a fault for the play, and hence it was not allowed to do.

The origin of the penalty is credited the goal keeper and the business man William McCrum in 1890 in Milford, Armagh, in the Northern Ireland. The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) presented the idea for IFAB, and after much debate, the board stated the idea to be valid from 2 June 1891. The penalty was introduced in the 1891-1892 season! And since the very introduction of the penalty, the fact of using penalties in football playing was spread to the whole planet! This meant that a detail in the football play had consequences for all football games in the world. We cannot discriminate any football game by not using penalty, but all matches are included in using it.

The penalty is a concept with the sport genre called for football, because you are mainly playing the ball with one of your feet. In different national and international laws, it stands following about the penaly: Penalty should be taken when a team has committed one of the ten wrongdoings, and the actual wrongdoing in a match implies directly a free kick to the opposition when the actual wrongdoing in question has been done within own penalty area, and the ball is in play.

The penalty area is restricted of two lines perpendicular to the finish line 16,5 meters based on each goal bar, and which is connected together with a line parallel to the finish line, 16,5 meters from this. The penalty is taken from a mark 11 meters in front of goal. Only the goalkeeper and the person that will take the penalty are allowed to be inside the penalty area when the penalty should be taken. The other players should be behind the ball, outside the penalty area, and at least 9,15 meters from the ball. This means that the players should be outside the arc, and the radius from the arc to the penalty mark is exactly 9,15 meters. Hence, the players have placed themselves allowed if they are outside the arc.

In a penalty situation, the football should be shoot forward, and accordingly you cannot fool the goalkeeper by taken a penalty back to a teammate. The ball is in play when the ball is kicked, and the players are then allowed to move within the field, and can make a goal for an eventual return from the bar, the crossbar or the keeper. The player that has taken the penalty, has not the right to score on a return for the ball when the ball has hit the bar. The ball must have touched another player before the penalty executor can toach the ball again!

If the position is a draw after extra rounds, there will be a penalty shoot-out. And the best team is making the most goals in this competition, and they will win the match!

Many football matches in world history have been played without penalty, and some have been played with one or more penalties. The football history for the world is exciting and funny, and there are many things that have been done in these matches. One has to study them more carefully to get all the details in every match. Much has been said and written about penalties, also in the newspapers in the world. And the greatest save in the World Cup ever was not a penalty, but is was a heading from Pele against Gordon Banks! Gordon Banks saved it! And this happened in the World Cup in football in Mexico in 1970! Brazil won the match against England 1-0!
