Visiting Castel del Monte, the Fortress on the Mountain [ENG-ITA]

in OCD5 years ago

Yesterday we took advantage of the beautiful day to visit Castel del Monte, the most important of the castles of Federico II di Svevia and named UNESCO World Heritage Site. The castle was built in the 13th century and has a strategic octagonal shape, strengthened in the corners by eight guard towers, making the castle difficult to conquer.

A well-groomed dirt path leads us to the castle turning around it, to avoid the consistent slope of the hill. The kings' strategy of building their fortress on top of a hill or mountain was customary because they could better control any enemy attacks from above.

A breathtaking panorama is in fact clearly visible along the entire route and from north to south you can observe the incredible natural landscape, from the Adriatic Sea to the Apennines. The road to reach the castle is the favorite destination for many amateur cyclists who constantly take turns reaching the entrance.

The castle is built with local white stone and has a hexagonal plan. The internal courtyard, also octagonal in shape, was a meeting place for the inhabitants of the castle. Over the years the castle has become a prison and subsequently a reception center for the most deprived. Only in the twentieth century, when the Italian state bought the castle, did restoration work begin towards the end of the century, coinciding with the appointment of UNESCO.

Today it is possible to visit the castle daily and also have a tour guide. The castle is often home to numerous art exhibitions during the year and in summer it is home to theatrical performances.
