Hello guys! Monday was another beautiful day for this time of year so I decided to visit Red Star Belgrade Stadium after a long time. Two days earlier, the 162nd derby between the home Red Star and the eternal rival Partizan was played at this stadium. The match was not of some quality football so the final result was 0:0. And now, let's see the official Rajko Mitic Stadium, home of the Red Star football players, looks like!
My first encounter with the stadium was back in 2000. The derby was played. Since my father is a fan of this club, he took me to the first game. I was delighted with the atmosphere. I have heard about Red Star so many times before and this this was the first time I was in the stadium. Fascinating to me at that moment. Wooow, I'm in the stadium! 😂 That was the start of my cheering for Red Star.
The Rajko Mitic Stadium was officially built in 1963. The Red Star football club and the Serbian national football team play in this stadium. The stadium is popularly known as "Marakana". The first game here was played by FC Red Star and FC Rijeka in 1963. The stadium bears the name of first Red Star legend Rajko Mitic. The highest attendance at the stadium was at the match with the Hungarian Ferenecvaros in 1975. The match was attended by more than 96000 people.
Red Star is the most trophy Serbian football club with a total of 61 trophies. The club's biggest success is the European Champions Cup won in 1991. in Bari and the Intercontinental Cup next year in Tokyo. This is the place where many football giants such as Real Madrid, Liverpool, Bayern Munchen and many others lost. The Red Star's last major victory occured in 2018. when it was defeated Liverpool, the future champion of Europe and the world. The match was played at this stadium and the score was 2:0. An incredible win for Red Star given the difference between the budgets of the two clubs.
Many well-known players have passed through this club. One of the biggest strengths of the club is its strong youth football school. It is wide known that Red Star has a great youth school. Players like Rajko Mitic, Dragan Dzajic, Dragan Stojkovic have left a deep mark on the club. We must not forget the entire 1991. generation that beat Bayern Munich in the final and thus became European champion. Im short, FC Red Star is a club with a huge history and tradition.
This is the main stand at the stadium. It is located on the north side where are usually the biggest club fans, popular "Delije".
I also visited the auxiliary grounda where the youth trained. A beautiful day for football!
