Hello everyone and welcome back to my blog. Today I propose a watercolor painting that has as its subject the detail of the head of Ulysses in the famous sculptural Group of Polyphemus found in 1957 in Sperlonga.

Ulysses' expression is very strong and characterizes it so I decided to make a watercolor that emphasizes the features of the face.

I want to tell you about the discovery and the site of the Villa of Tiberius, considering that the Romans built dozens of villas for their emperors, but this one we find in Sperlonga is particularly suggestive and interesting.

This finding was the most important in Lazio at least in the past hundred years.

Emperor Tiberius had a large villa built on a stretch of breathtaking beauty.

The Villa was on several levels and had two fish ponds and a circular pool with a nymphaeum, which extended to the mountain walls with caves.

Here, inside a cave the fragments of the group of Polyphemus were found, then recomposed as a whole.

It was not very difficult for experts to attribute the same partnership of the two marble works.
The expressive modalities of the face and hair are practically the same.

The discovery is even more important if we consider that the sculptors of this monumental work were the same as the famous Laocoon preserved in the Vatican Museums or the Greeks: Hagesandros, Athenedoros, and Polydoros.

Testa di Ulisse del gruppo di Polifemo.

Ciao a tutti e bentornati sul mio blog. Oggi vi propongo un dipinto ad acquerello che ha come soggetto il particolare della testa di Ulisse nel famoso gruppo scultoreo di Polifemo ritrovato nel 1957 a Sperlonga.

L'espressione di Ulisse è molto forte e lo caratterizza così ho deciso di realizzare un acquarello che ne enfatizzi i tratti del volto. Ecco le fasi del dipinto e in aggiunta una mia composizione che stamperò in alta definizione per dei poster.

Voglo parlarvi del ritrovamento e del sito della Villa di Tiberio, considerando che i romani costruirono decine di Ville per i loro imperatori, ma questa che troviamo a Sperlonga è particolarmente suggestiva ed interessante.

Questo ritrovamento è stato il più importante avvenuto nel Lazio almeno negli ultimi cento anni.

Dove era collocato il gruppo marmoreo?

L'imperatore Tiberio si fece costruire una grande Villa su un tratto di costa di bellezza mozzafiato.
La Villa era su diversi livelli e aveva due peschiere e una piscina circolare con un ninfeo, che si estendevano fino alle pareti della montagna con delle grotte.

Ecco, dentro una grotta furono ritrovati i frammenti del gruppo di Polifemo, poi ricomposti nel loro insieme.

Un'opera gigantesca, dove possiamo osservare Ulisse che acceca Polifemo addormentato.

La scoperta è ancora più importante se consideriamo che gli scultori di quest'opera monumentale furono gli stessi del celebre Laocoonte conservato nei Musei Vaticani ossia i greci: Agesandro, Atenodoro e Polidoro.

Non è stato molto difficile per gli esperti attibuire la stessa partenità delle due opere in marmo ai tre artisti greci. Le modalità espressive del volto ed i capelli sono praticamente gli stessi.
