Earthquake

An earthquake occurred on June 3rd, around 2PM, at Loihi Seamount, the underwater volcano which is 20 miles southwest off the coast of the Big Island. It caught my attention because the ground and my home shook. The US Geological Society reported it was a 4.0 earthquake. Loihi is an active volcano, whose summit or peak is about 3,200 feet (975 meters) below the surface of the Pacific.

Fortunately there was no Tsunami (tidal wave) generated by it, and no activity was detected at the Kilauea Volcano or Mauna Loa Volcano here on the Big Island. Of note, Kilauea is among the world’s most active volcanoes and Mauna Loa is the largest volcano on Earth.

Loihi Seamount, the underwater volcano which is 20 miles southwest off the coast of the Big Island. The name Lo'ihi" means long in Hawaiian native language and Lohi is a long Volcano at 4 km long, and 3 km wide. The summit has three craters and each spouts lava. The natural evolution is that lava will pile up increasing it’s height, so that it will become a new Hawaiian Island in about 10,000-100,000 years.
