What is plagiarism?

Plagiarism is presenting someone else’s work or ideas as your own, with or without their consent, by incorporating it into your work without full acknowledgement. All published and unpublished material, whether in manuscript, printed or electronic form, is covered under this definition. Plagiarism may be intentional or reckless, or unintentional. Under the regulations for examinations, intentional or reckless plagiarism is a disciplinary offence.

Plagiarism can occur in many different contexts. While often associated with school assignments, it can also happen in professional settings, such as the arts, academia, and the business world.

Types of plagiarism

Plagiarism can involve copying words or images directly, paraphrasing sentences or passages, or coping someone else’s ideas without citing the original words.

Global plagiarismmeans plagiarizing an entire text. This includes purchasing an essay or turning in an assignment completed by someone else.
Patchwork or mosaic plagiarism means copying phrases, passages, and ideas from different sources and compiling them into a new text.
Incremental plagiarism means inserting a small amount of plagiarized content in a mostly original text.
Self-plagiarism means recycling your own previous work that you’ve already submitted or published.

Reasons to avoid plagiarism

There could be hundreds of reasons to avoid plagiarism. It is recommended to check plagiarism before you submit your content anywhere. We will discuss some of those which are more important when writing your blog or research paper.

1. No Self-respect

There may be some incidents of accidental plagiarism. The author uses thoughts that aren’t his own accidentally in his or her writing. The individual wasn’t consciously and properly trying to see whether or not the research was cited.

When you plagiarize, you portray the job of someone else as your own, which implies that you don’t represent yourself. It is the first reason you should not use plagiarized content because it will ruin your self-respect.

You should think about yourself when writing a paper and consider plagiarizing to see if you respect yourself and the person you are about to take from.

Nobody else will respect you if you cannot respect yourself in your work.

2. Impedes your reputation at college

Academic honesty is fundamental to universities and colleges.

Academic integrity implies forceful recognition of all scholarships as a product of one’s efforts and recognition of those from outside intellectual research. Teachers are now more conscious of plagiarism. Every time they receive papers from students, this is the first priority for most of teachers to check if student submitted the original work or not.

If a student is found to be guilty of plagriasm, He/she could face expulsion or other consequences.

3. Bad for SEO

Plagiarized content is hated and punished accordingly by search engines.

Search engines sort duplicate material based on several factors. These factors include the published date, essentially curbing the capacity to rank.

So, if you are using copy or plagiarized content for your website, it is pretty pointless. It could cause your website to rank lower than earlier.

4. Harsh Consequences

You will face strict legal consequences if you get caught plagiarizing.

It is incredibly difficult to overcome the effects of plagiarism because many trackers will determine if someone else’s work is being stolen.

It can affect your brand so badly you can’t even imagine. No one would like to pay heavy legal penalties or serving sentence.

Quote your work properly and ensure that you acknowledge the author it belongs to, so that you have no future consequences.

5. Kills the Reputation

Plagiarism is like a lethal sickness which can entirely abolish your reputation. Many bloggers admit that they have copied content from other sites to use it for their own.

“Once a cheater, always a cheater” is a slogan that will act as a reputation for those committing the act of plagiarism. Regardless of the quality of their work, plagiarism testing will be applied to their work, because they can no longer be trusted.

6. Your skills remain unpolished

One consequence of plagiarism may be that you cannot know how to do research and how to compose the original content. Such effects can be a long-term threat to you and to future, because skill is one essential element after hard work that plays very important role in success.

You need to write original content in order to polish your writing skills for your blog. Conduct your own research, write your own content and you are free to fly.

7. Fresh Content gets you more Visitors

There will be more visitors on your site if you write your blog on your own.

You see, when you are copying, you don’t have exact or complete information for your visitors. If you will write fresh and creative content, you will provide what your visitors need to read. Most of the visitors don’t stay on one page for long time. They just come and look for information they need.

Make your blogs fresh without copying material from other sites. Plagiarism is not a solution to anything at all. In fact, it throws you into lot of troubles.

8. Harms Your Professional Career

Plagiarism can disturb your professional career.

That said, it is dishonest when you plagiarize. It leads people to believe that throughout your career you act dishonestly to improve yourself. It will take almost a lifetime to be considered honest again, but your professional career can be permanently harmed by plagriasm.

9. Everything aside, it is unethical

It is really immoral and unethical to steal from someone’s hard work and dedication. You will suffer the consequences if you repeatedly copy content. These may include bringing lawsuits against your website, legal consequences for burglary or loss of trust by your visitors. It just isn’t worth it to face severe punishment.

10. Considering the bigger picture to avoid plagiarism

There are many ways to avoid plagiarism for the above stated reasons, such as citing the original references you intend to use. When referencing a source,

Be sure that you have done enough research.
Make sure you put quotes of that section that you want to quote.
Place the source location, so the readers are able to see where you listed the sources.
Put down the source writer.
Make sure that you insert your reference after you have used a website.

Avoid plagiarism by quoting, paraphrasing, and citing

The most surefire way to avoid plagiarism is to always cite your sources. But you also need to make sure to properly integrate them into your text by either quoting or paraphrasing.

Avoiding plagiarism when paraphrasing

When you want to express an idea or information from a source, paraphrase or summarize it.

Original text

“The generally accepted theory for the evolutionary origins of play is that it allows children to learn actions and tasks that they will need to master as adults. In hunter-gatherer populations, games that help children develop accuracy, power, and hand-eye coordination are useful practice for hunting.” (Goldfield, 2021)

Simply changing a few words or using a synonym tool is not correct paraphrasing. In fact, you may unintentionally change the meaning of the source. To show you’ve fully understood the material, explain the author’s key point entirely in your own words, and make sure to cite the source.

Paraphrased badly

The commonly believed hypothesis for the evolutionary beginnings of play is that it enables kids to learn activities and things that they will need to conquer later . In hunter-gatherer populations, pastimes that assist children develop exactness, strength, and hand-eye coordination are handy practice for hunting.

Paraphrased well

Experts believe that play has an evolutionary function. According to Goldfield (2021), play provided hunter-gatherer children with the opportunity to start learning skills that they would need in order to survive to adulthood
