ACHIEVEMENT 3 by @vincentibe Task: Content Etiquette

in Newcomers' Community3 years ago (edited)

Hello friends, here is Vincent Ibelachi. I want to talk about the subject of plagiarism.

Plegiarism has been defined as 'the representation of another author's language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions as one's own original work.' Source
ln other words, plagiarism can be said to be intellectual theft - a situation where someone adopts or copies an ideas, pictures, sentences, an entire work without the permission of the original owner or proper acknowledgment and/or referencing to the source. Plagiarism attributes the ownership of a piece to you and not the original owner.

Plagiarism can lead to indictment and a payment of damages to the copyright owner. Therefore it is a criminal act and should be avoided by all means possible.

The concept of plagiarism or intellectual theft is not restricted to literary materials but includes media images, music used as soundtracks, Designs etc without permission and/or properly referencing the sources.

Plagiarism can come in different forms. And understanding the various forms is the key to avoiding plagiarism.source.

Concise effort should be exerted in avoiding plagiarism. This is because one can fall victim sometimes without a deliberate effort.

Some of the major forms of plagiarism are as follows:

DIRECT PLAGIARISM
Direct plagiarism occurs when one lifts texts verbatim from another person's work without the use of quotation marks and referencing.

MOSAIC PLAGIARISM
This form of plagiarism occurs when a writer borrow Phrases from another person's work without quotation or referencing or tries to change the words of the original writer while retaining the ideas therein.

ACCIDENTAL PLAGIARISM
Accidental plagiarism occurs when a person neglects to cite their sources, or misquotes their sources, or unintentionally paraphrases a source by using similar words, groups of words, and/or sentence structure without attribution.source

SELF PLAGIARISM
This is a situation where one copies his own previous work without properly acknowledging those who contributed to the success of the work.

AVOIDING PLAGIARISM
To avoid plagiarism therefore, is easy, yet a noble course. Rid your work of 'stolen items', simply by doing a proper acknowledgment and linking of source(s) to any external material be it a phrase, a sentence, a body of text, music, video, images etc if you have the permission to use them.

I have read and understood the Steemit Etiquette on Steemit Community and will do my best to embrace them" at the end of this task post.

I am happy you took the time out to read through my post. Thank you.
