Sundarban is a vast forest along the Bay of Bengal and is one of the world's natural wonders. The Sundarbans were possibly named after the Sundari tree, which grows in abundance there. Sundarbans is the world's largest continuous tidal mangrove forest, with an area of Khulna, Bagerhat and Satkhira districts of the southwestern part of Bangladesh and West Bengal's district of Twenty-four Parganas.

About 6,017 square kilometres of the entire Sundarbans are located in Bangladesh. The soils and ecology of the Sundarbans mangrove forests are unique, and the effects of tidal inundation and salinity are evident. Due to this particular feature, the biodiversity here is also incredible.

The excellent composition and arrangement of various vegetation types and the unique assemblage of wildlife mark this forest as an amazing natural phenomenon. In 1903, Mr Prain recorded 334 plant species in his book on the flora of Sundarbans. One hundred sixty-five algae and 13 species of orchids are also found in the Sundarbans.

Out of about 50 native mangrove plant species, 35 species are found in the Sundarbans alone. The main tree species of this forest are Sundari and Gewa. Trees such as pasur, dhundal, garan, bine, crab, keora, etc. also grow naturally. Sundarbans are unique in their variety of fauna. The most important habitat of the Royal Bengal Tiger is the Sundarbans.

Sundarbans play an important role in the national economy and the economy of the southwestern region of Bangladesh.

Apart from traditional forest resources such as timber, firewood and mand, large quantities of house leaves, honey, beeswax, fish, crabs and snails are regularly extracted from these forests.
