Questions & Answers

Have you retrieved all your keys on Steemit?

Yes. I have all of them in a ZIP file, a RAR file, an encrypted file stored on a seperate hard disk and also as a physical document. I didn’t use cloud storage such as Google Drive because, if my Google account gets hacked, the hackers will have full access to my Google Drive account and may download the file and get to my Steemit account.

Do you know each of these keys functions and restrictions?

That was the first thing I researched immediately I got my keys and I discovered that: There are two categories of keys each having four sub-types. They are:
Private Keys:

KeysUses
Posting KeyThis is used to log into DApps (Decentralized Apps) powered by Steem. As well as perform other actions such as posting, resteeming etc.
Memo KeyThis is used to decrypt private transfers.
Active KeyThis is used to perform actions such as transferring tokens or for a Steem power up or power down.
Owner KeyThis is used to reset all other keys and recover your account. It should be kept in a very strictly safe environment.

Public keys: These are keys used to encrypt or verify messages. Its keys possess the same properties of private keys but the passcode for each is different.
Last of all, The Master Key which is used generate all other keys and should be kept safe.

How do you plan to keep your Master Password?

It is stored in the RAR, the ZIP and the encrypted file in which all those files are stored on a seperate hard drive.

Do you know how to transfer your Steem tokens to another Steem user’s account?

Yes of course,

  • Login to your Steem wallet.

Screenshot (93).png

  • Under the area labelled STEEM, click on the arrow next to the amount of Steem you have.
  • A dropdown menu will appear with options, where you click on Transfer.
  • You would be linked to a page where you will have to specify the person and amount you want to transfer.
  • That will take you to a confirmation page where you will click on OK to confirm the transfer.

Do you know how to power up your STEEM?

Yes. It basically follows the same process of Transfering Steem.

  • Login to your STEEM wallet.
  • Under the area labelled STEEM, click on the arrow next to the amount of STEEM you have.
  • In the dropdown, Click on Power Up.
  • Specify the amount of liquid STEEM to convert and Click Power Up.

Conclusion

It has been great learning about basic security on STEEM. I now have the knowledge that:

  • Each key is special and unique in its own way.
  • The Master Key should be kept in a very special place and used only in terms of account recovery.
  • You should not use your Master Password for day-to-day logins but you should use the posting key.
  • You can Buy STEEM, Sell STEEM, Save STEEM, Delegate STEEM, Power Up, Power Down and lots more through your wallet.

Thanks for the excellent tutorial @cryptokannon.
