Understanding Plagiarism.
What is plagiarism?
A.pngsource

According to Merriam-Webster dictionary; plagiarism is an act of plagiarizing. And it went further to define plagiarizing as an act of stealing and passing off (the ideas or words of another) as one’s own: the use of (another’s production) without crediting the source.

Secondly; it said, it is to commit literary theft: present it as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source.

Types of Plagiarism:
There Are Four Major Types Of Plagiarism.

  1. Direct plagiarism: This is defined as the word-for-word transcription of a section of someone else’s work, without attribution and without quotation marks. Note, this is unethical, academically dishonest, and grounds for disciplinary actions, including expulsion. www.goggle.com.

  1. Self-plagiarism: This is a process where a content writer or blogger might have to write multiple articles on the same topic. (i.e when a writer put down his/her own word again and again and submit the material to different sites.

  2. Accidental plagiarism: This occurs when a person neglects to cite their sources, or unintentionally paraphrases a source by using similar words, group of words, and/or sentence structure without attribution. Note: lack of intent does not absolve the student of responsibility for plagiarism.

  3. Mosaic plagiarism: This occurs when a writer or student borrows phrases from a source without using quotation marks, or finds synonyms for the author’s language while keeping to the same general structure and meaning of the original.

Having Known What Plagiarism Is All About And Its Types, Let’s Discuss On How To Deal With It.

  1. Give yourself and ample time to research on your work. Don’t wait until it’s too late to start working on a document.
  2. Paraphrase.
  3. Provide proper in-text citation.
  4. Provide references.
  5. Check for plagiarism
  6. Authenticate sources before using them.
  7. Quote sources.
  8. Have interest in your topic
  9. Understand what to cite and what not to.
  10. Present your own ideas.

    Why is plagiarism unprofessional
Plagiarism is unprofessional because it is unethical, i.e, it is a form of theft, by taking the ideas and words of others and pretending they are your own, you are stealing someone’s intellectual property.
Secondly, because the plagiariser subsequently benefits from this theft.
