in Newcomers' Community3 years ago
Good day members of the Steemit community, I am pleased to be writing my achievement 3 task which is on Content Etiquette. I will begin by defining what plagiarism is.

What is Plagiarism?

In simple terms, plagiarism is an act of presenting someone else's work, in the form of texts or images without the intention of giving credit to the author. A plagiarist steals someone else's work or ideas and presents them as theirs.

"Plagiarism is the representation of another author's language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions as one's own original work."

Plagiarism can be committed in many forms, the most common form is copying texts from a source without citing the source. With the availability of answers to essays and research notes on the internet, plagiarism has gotten worse over the years, and it is increasingly becoming rampant among students. The other forms of plagiarism are;

  • Copying texts from a source but changing a few words.
  • Failing to put a quote in quotation marks.
  • Giving incorrect information about the source of a quotation or an image.

Types of Plagiarism

There are many types of plagiarism but five of the most common types will be discussed here.

  • Direct Plagiarism

This type of plagiarism involves copying an entire piece of work written by someone else, word for word, and presenting it as a new piece. It is the most obvious form of plagiarism because the words are copied directly without quotation marks or giving credit to the original author. It is also known as word-for-word plagiarism.

  • Paraphrasing Plagiarism

This is the most common type of plagiarism as it involves altering a few words or phrases from someone else's work and putting it forward as yours.

  • Self Plagiarism

As the name implies, this occurs when a writer copies parts or whole of their writing and publishes it as a new one. This involves summarizing or reusing one's old work as a whole instead of writing a new one from scratch. It is also known as auto-plagiarism.

  • Mosaic Plagiarism

This occurs when a writer takes phrases from several sources and mixes them up with his original ideas and puts them out as his work. It is also known as patchwork plagiarism.

  • Accidental Plagiarism

This type of plagiarism occurs when a writer accidentally forgets to cite his sources, cites a wrong source, or misquotes phrases or parts of the texts he got from a source.

Consequences of Plagiarism

  • Plagiarism can result in legal actions, fines, and penalties.
  • Plagiarism can have a negative effect on one's career and reputation.
  • It promotes low self-esteem, laziness, and dishonesty as the writer depends on other people's work to create his own.
  • If caught for plagiarism, a student can be suspended or expelled from school.

Ways To Avoid Plagiarism

  • Understand what plagiarism is all about and what it constitutes.
  • Learn how to cite sources properly.
  • Most of your work should be based on your ideas.
  • Ensure to always quote from your sources.
  • Use a plagiarism checker before publishing or submitting your work.

Conclusion

In the Steemit community, producing original content that is from one's brain is highly rewarding which is why it's important to cite contents or, pieces of work that are a part of others' work. In this community, plagiarism is a forbidden act and can lead to one being blacklisted or permanently banned from the community.

  • Learn to say no to plagiarism!
  • Learn to be honest and original!

Finally, I can confidently say that I have read and I completely understand the rudiments of content etiquette in the Steemit community and I will do my best in adopting them.
