ACHIEVEMENT 2 BY @reeda7: BASIC SECURITY ON STEEM

in Newcomers' Community3 years ago (edited)

Greetings to everyone, hope you are all well. I am here once again to complete another achievement task which is Achievement 2: Basic Security on Steem.

Having passwords for your accounts is a requirement of every social media platform. But is your account completely secure just because??, no it's not. The safety of your account should be your utmost priority.

Steemit has taken great initiatives to help users secure their accounts. From the moment you have successfully created your account, Steemit gives you an alphanumeric password consisting of 51 letters and numbers in total. This first password you are given is called the Master Password.

From this key is where all your other keys are derived from. If ever your account gets compromised, It is only this key and the Owner key that can help you recover your account.

After successfully creating my steemit account, I have learnt quite a lot about the various keys and their uses as well as the security measures needed to secure my account. Below are what I have learnt so far.

1.Have you retrieved all your keys?
Yes I have. After creating my account, I was given the opportunity to save a pdf of my keys. I currently have them stored on my Google drive and on my pendrive as well.

2.Do you know each of these keys and their restrictions?
Yes I do. Steemit provides us with four main private keys which are;
Posting Key
Active Key
Owner Key
Memo Key

Here are their various functions:

Posting Key: This key is the most commonly used key. This key enables users to log into their accounts and perform various functions such as ; making posts, up voting, resteeming and so many others. With a key like the posting key, it can get compromised easily which is why it isn't needed in performing transactions.

Active Key: The active key is one of the most important keys provided by Steemit. With the help of this key, users are able to perform transactions like powering up, transferring funds and also updating one's profile. If ever this key is compromised, your steemit wallet could be hacked and funds could be lost. This key should always be kept safe.

Owner key: This key is a very important key. It should only be used when necessary. If ever your account gets compromised, this is the only key that can help you recover it aside your Master password. This key should always be kept safe.

Memo Key: The Memo key is rarely used but is still very important. This key helps user to encrypt and decrypt messages when transferring funds.

3.How do you plan to keep your master password?
My master password along with my other keys have been safely stored offline on my pendrive and also on my Google drive.

4.Do you know how to transfer your steem tokens to another steemit account?
Yes I do. Here are the steps you can follow to do so:
1.log onto your steemit wallet using your active key
2.Click on "Steem", after which a drop down menu appears from which you click "transfer"

3.After clicking on "transfer", another window opens, this is where you provide the recipient's account name and amount to be transferred.

4.4.After inputing the recipient's username and amount to be transferred, click on "Next" then confirm transaction using your active key.

5.Do you know how to power up on Steem?
Yes I do. Here are the steps to guide you through:
1.log onto your wallet using your active key.
2.Click on"Steem", after which a drop down menu appears from which you click on "power up".

3.After clicking on "power up", another window appears, this is where you provide the amount of steem you want to power up with.

All in all, I would like to advise users to always keep their keys safe because there is no way steemit can recover them if you lose them. Thank you so much for your time. Stay safe.
