Greeting Steemians!

I’m so excited to be able to write today. Plagiarism is a big/has been a big problem that cannot be overemphasized, but I shall explore it here with you all; I present to you my ACHIEVEMENT 3.

PLAGIARISM

Plagiarism is the presentation or use of another person’s original work as yours without giving an actual credit or proper acknowledgement to the real author, or source. Plagiarism is being found in cases like social media platforms, academics etc. Plagiarism is illegal and seen as theft.

There are different types of plagiarism but I will look into just 3 and they include;

1. Direct Plagiarism:

This has to do with copying an author’s work directly. I.e word to word without reference or citation.

2. Accidental Plagiarism:

Plagiarism can happen accidentally even though “plagiarism is plagiarism” This happens when the individual forgets to source or forgets to paraphrase. It can happen unknowingly. For example, I got an article from Wikipedia which I needed to post on the steemit platform but because of TIME, I forgot to give reference or credit to the real author or site.

3. Self-Plagiarism:

Yes! You saw right, SELF-PLAGIARISM. This happens when an author takes an idea or words from his/her previous article without a source and gives credit. For example, I got an idea from my previous post and then copied word to word with paraphrasing or without referencing it simply because it’s mine. That is self-plagiarism.

 Consequences of plagiarism 

• It spoils a student reputation. In an academic setting, a student when plagiarized depending on the school can be expelled, or suspended, which will influence a great impact on the student’s academic record. Here, in the steem blockchain particularly in the steemit crypto academy community, once a steemians is caught at least twice or more will be suspended or muted from the community.

• Plagiarism can result in legal actions, fines as well as penalties. Here, the penalties most times lies on the shoulder of the curators, the professors that are in the crypto academy community or the host of a contest in steemit. Though most of the penalties might be to downvote or grade you without a scoreline or disqualify you from the contest.

•It also destroys professional reputation.

How to avoid plagiarism
There are different ways in which we can avoid plagiarism;

1. Citation:

In the situation where you got an article from a web page, or a site, citing is necessary; you either cite the source or the website, with this you have to avoid plagiarism.

For example;

In medicine, venipuncture or venepuncture is the process of obtaining intravenous access for the purpose of venous blood sampling (also called phlebotomy) or intravenous therapy. source

In healthcare, this procedure is performed by medical laboratory scientists, medical practitioners, some EMTs, paramedics, phlebotomists, dialysis technicians, and other nursing staff. source

In veterinary medicine, the procedure is performed by veterinarians and veterinary technicians.source

As you can see from the example above, I took an article from a Wikipedia web page, or a site and I cited the source.

2. Quotation:

Quoting an author is another way of avoiding plagiarism. After copying the write-up, it is important that you reference the author.

For example;

I am the Blueprint, you are gonna spend a whole lifetime trying to find a girl like me- Nengi Rebecca Hampson

3. Paraphrasing:

Paraphrasing can be done to avoid plagiarism. The writer uses a different word to express what the original author has written to achieve better clarity.

Conclusion

In conclusion, it is very important to stop/prevent plagiarism because it tends to destroy our reputation as students, professionals etc. Let us all join hands to say NO to plagiarism.
