What is Plagiarism?
I will say plagiarism is the practice of taking someone else’s work, article, or idea and passing them off as your own.
The University of Oxford defined plagiarism as

“Plagiarism is presenting someone else’s work or ideas as your own, with or without their consent, by incorporating it into your work without full acknowledgment. All published and unpublished material, whether in manuscript, printed, or electronic form, is covered under this definition. Plagiarism may be intentional or reckless, or unintentional. Under the regulations for examinations, intentional or reckless plagiarism is a disciplinary offense.” source

Types of Plagiarism

  1. Direct Plagiarism: This is when the plagiarist copies and pastes the text from someone else’s work without citation of the source or removing quotation marks.
  2. Mosaic Plagiarism: In this scenario, the plagiarist may have mentioned the source of the content he has referred to. But, if he/she does not acknowledge the quoted part or put them under the quotation marks correctly, then the writer commits the crime of mosaic plagiarism.
  3. Self-Plagiarism: Self-plagiarism is one of the common types of plagiarism, where school students copy and paste part of their previously submitted academic work. If the student submits the same paper for two different class projects without asking the teacher involved, then that is considered self-plagiarism.
  4. Accidental Plagiarism: This is when the plagiarist misquotes the phrases or parts of the text he/she has taken from the source material or does not cite the source even or adequately or cites a wrong source.

Causes of Plagiarism
• Laziness
• Fear of failure
• Lack of good writing skills
• Late preparation

Ways to avoid Plagiarism
Below are some ways we can avoid plagiarism;
• Grant proper citations of contents from the source. When we take up contents that are not originally ours, its right to give proper citations of those contents to avoid plagiarism
• Avoid wanting to take glory or reward for what is not your work.
• Make sure you make thorough and proper research in other to create unique and original content and always use Plagiarism checking tools to check for Plagiarism.
