Hello Everyone!

It is my pleasure to engage everyone of you once again in my blog. Achievement 1 & 2 has been done and of course lessons learnt. It gets better as I continue in this new found love of writing articles/blog.

Achievement 3 task specifically handles the issue of Content Etiquette which basically has to do with Plagiarism.
This is a community that permits the sharing of original ideas through write-ups, pictorials and audio-visuals, hence the issue of content etiquette should be well conveyed to all for strict adherence to rules as it affects sharing and citing of contents. Meanwhile, Plagiarism may be intentional, unintentional or out of being headstrong.

WHAT IS PLAGIARISM
By definition, it is the representation of another author's language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions as one's own original work.

It is an explicit presentation of another person's work (such quotes, language, ideas, inventions, thoughts...etc) as your original work without the permission of the original owner by blending it into one's own work lacking complete recognition.

Generally, plagiarism in itself is not a crime, however, like the fraud of counterfeiting is punishable in a court for prejudices caused by copyright breach, violation of moral rights, or wrongful act. In academia and industry, plagiarism is a serious ethical offense.

TYPES OR FORMS OF PLAGIARISM
Plagiarism comes in various forms, ranging from reusing an entire document to rewriting a single paragraph. In the end, all forms or types of plagiarism come down to presenting someone else’s ideas or words as your own.

Copy-and-paste plagiarism, means making use of a paragraph from another source without a quotation. Learning how to quote is necessary for one to include a passage from another source. This also known as direct plagiarism.

This occurs when one uses parts of his or her own previous work such as paper, a dataset or literature review without proper citation of. It may appear funny for one to be penalised for self plagiarism, this is because readers expects original work so self plagiarism is contrary to their expectations.

Mosaic plagiarism refers to the act of copying and pasting various pieces of text together to design a kinda patchwork or mosaic of another researchers’ ideas.
In this case, the result may seem to be a totally new or fresh text but however, the ideas and words are not new.

Global Plagiarism
This takes place when someone else’s paper is used with pretence that the idea or work is yours.

Meanwhile, the consequences of plagiarism can be personal, professional, ethical, and legal.

Loosing the ability to publish is tantamount to the end of an academic position and a destroyed reputation.

When there is a case where an author files a legal action against a plagiarist, there is a possibility that the author may be granted monetary indemnification. There may also be monetary penalties paid by a journalist working for newspaper, magazine or other publisher even a student in found guilty of plagiarism.

Plagiarism can lead to the suspension or expulsion of a student. When the record of a student reflects ethical offence such as plagiarism, it can cause the barring of the student from entering collage from high school or another collage. Plagiarism as an offence is not taken lightly by schools, colleges, and universities.

Destroyed Professional Reputation
Plagiarism is capable of damaging the career of a politician, professional business person or a public figure as it follows them through their entire career. This not only lead to loss of job and position, it poses difficulty in getting another reputable job. Plagiarism can ruin the plagiarist's name thereby limiting the chances of making a meaningful or significant career.

Cite The Original Source
Each time one makes a quote or paraphrase, an in-text citation (or footnote citation) that identifies the original author must be included. It frequently also includes the publication year and hitherto, a page number.

In-text citation certainly shoud correspond to a full reference in the bibliography or reference at the end of your paper. This is the exact details where there the information came from which permits readers locate the source.

Citation comes in various styles and each have a peculiar siting rule. The common styles include APA, MLA and Chicago Style. It imperative to constantly apply or use one style through a text.

Quote and Paraphrase
Paragraphing or quoting the original text is a must if you want to share a piece of information or an idea from a source while writing a paper.

Quoting means copying a piece of text word-for-word. The copied text must be introduced in your own words, enclosed in quotation marks, and correctly attributed to the original author

  • Adding the power of an author's words to support by highlighting a specific passage or phrase.

  • Disagreeing with an author's line of argument, compare and contrast with an explicit view points.

  • Paraphrasing

This is the act of using explaining something from a source in your own terms. It allows you to give only the most important information from a passage.
Unlike quoting, paraphrasing is rephrasing an author's own words . This is reworking the author's ideas, words and sentence structures with own words. Paraphrasing should be used when;

  • Trying to avoid plagiarism and overusing quotation.

  • Using your own words in presenting your article.

  • Cite the original source

An in-text citation or footnote must be included every time quoting and paraphrasing is done. It frequently includes the year of publication year and page number.

  • Summarizing

This includes putting the main idea(s) of several authors into your own words. Significantly, summaries are more concise and presice than the original source materials hence should be well used to avoid plagiarism. Summaries are done when:

  • Establishing background or overview of a topic
  • Ascertaining the main ideas of a source and describing a knowledge.
