Security simply means Protection from danger (Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English). It is a very important aspect of man’s life. It is also one of the very relevant aspects of every online platform especially in this era of internet hackers who look for loopholes online to take advantage of errors and negligence of other internet users to cause havocs like information or financial theft.

Having gone through the basics of security on Steemit, I noticed that Steemit has a unique security system that includes varieties of keys that are involved in the operation of various levels for the smooth running of the system and these can not easily be decoded by hackers except for careless users.

Examples of Keys on Steemit platform

My Steemit wallet

  1. The Posting Key
This key is mainly used for posting, editing of posts, commenting on posts, upvoting and downvoting, muting of accounts in other words for all social networking functions.
If you want to access this key, when you get to wallet, you click on key then on permission and scroll down.

  2. The Active Key
This one is more sensitive key. It has to be kept very safe because hackers can use it to make take actions in ones’ wallet.
The Active key functions in the exchange and transfer of tokens, voting for witnesses, creating new user, powering up and down of Steem, SBD conversion and placing order on an exchange.
You can view your Active Key by going to your wallet, clicking on the key and permission and then, on the Active Key.

  3. The Owner Key
The Owner Key is the most important and sensitive key amongst the private keys. It should be handled with utmost care as it can be used to gain access to other keys. It has extra permission for account recovery if needed.
The Owner key can also be used to reset posting and active keys and to decline voting rights.
You can view your power key you by following the same procedure mentioned above for posting and active keys.

  4. The Master Password
This is the password given to you when signed up. The master password is so called because other keys are generated from it. It is highly sensitive and should be kept very very safe. It’s advised to save offline as a hardcopy; that is printing or writing it out on a paper and keeping safe. Power key should only be used when the need arises.

  5. Memo Key
The memo key is used in encrypting and decrypting private messages during funds transfer. It’s the most important of all the keys.

That’s with the keys. Now let’s take a look at how to power up Steem. Now, you use your active keys to login to your wallet,

click on the Steem arrow that displays a drop down, click on the power up button. Now you fill in the amount you want to Power up and click on the option to power up.

To power down Steem, I also login to my wallet with my Active Keys , click on the power down option, fill in the amount I want to power down and submit to power down.

To do transfer Steem from my account to another Steem account.
I login to my wallet with my Active key, click on the STEEM arrow that reveals a menu, then I click on transfer. I will then fill in the account details of the receiver and click on the Next button.
