Bengaluru Engineer Falls Prey to Cryptocurrency Scam: A Tale of Deception and Broken Dreams

Shenoy, claiming to represent a prestigious global investment firm specializing in Bitcoin, skillfully lured the unsuspecting engineer into her web of deceit.
Trusting Shenoy's persuasive assurances, the engineer decided to invest a substantial sum of over $114,000 worth of BTC in January. The plot thickened in July when Shenoy, weaving a tale of immense profits, informed the engineer that a windfall of Rs 2 crore (US$240,000) awaited him. However, this lucrative opportunity came with a catch – a payment of Rs 50 lakh for TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) was allegedly required. Undeterred and still under Shenoy's spell, the engineer went to great lengths to procure the requested amount, taking loans from various banks. As the months unfolded, the harsh reality dawned on him – the promised profit was nothing more than a mirage. The anticipated windfall never materialized, leaving the once hopeful engineer grappling with the devastating realization that he had been duped.
Unfortunately, this tale of deception is not isolated in Bengaluru. In 2021, a crypto enthusiast and college lecturer in the city fell prey to a similar scam. Entrusting a scammer with the management of his trading account, he lost Rs 10 lakh (US$12,000) as lofty returns promised by the fraudster never came to fruition. The crypto market, though filled with potential for legitimate gains, also conceals significant risks. A recent incident highlighted by crypto community sleuth ZachXBT revealed a Discord scam resulting in losses of up to $880,000 in cryptocurrencies. Even the FBI issued a warning, cautioning against scammers impersonating venture capital executives.
