Achievement 3 by @michaelu40 , Task: Content Etiquette

in Newcomers' Community3 years ago

Hello everyone, i am delighted to write on content etiquette

Steam is a platform where its users can post anything of their choice. Users are expected to produce and share quality posts with original content by using their brain. Where a person produces and makes posts which include content from other peoples' works, it is recommended that the individual gives citation or source to that content. This gives rise to content etiquette.

Content etiquette refers to formal rules of correct behaviour guiding the content posted by users of steem platform. Failure to give credit to the owners of the content which you included in your own post can be termed as plagiarism.

Plagiarism is the representation of someone's ideas, words, expressions as your own without giving credit to them. Plagiarism could occur in various forms which include but not limited to: copying words or ideas from someone else without giving credit to the person; using portions of text from a source without quotation marks or citation; submitting someone's work, words or ideas as your own; paraphrasing from multiple sources and making the text fit together; submitting a work with proper citations but without any original content, etc.

TYPES OF PLAGIARISM
There are many types of plagiarism and they include:

  1. SELF PLAGIARISM - This is the type of plagiarism in which the writer republishes a work in its entirety or reuses portions of a previously written text while posting a new work.
  2. MOSAIC PLAGIARISM - This type occurs when a writer lifts phrases from a source without using quotation marks or maybe looks for similar words for the author's language while keeping to the same general structure and meaning of the original write up.
  3. ACCIDENTAL PLAGIARISM - This occurs when a person neglects to cite their sources, or misquotes their sources or unintentionally paraphrases a source by using similar words, group of words without attribution.

Now, how can plagiarism be avoided? Plagiarism could be avoided by:

  1. Giving credit to someone's thoughts or ideas whenever you use it and cite the sources correctly.
  2. Placing all direct quotes inside quotation marks.

Citation
When you lift a statement from someone's work, word by word, it is recommended that you place it in quotation marks and cite the source of where the statement was taken from close to it.
For example
It has been noted that potatoes are rich in vitamins and minerals. "The nutritional content of potatoes can vary depending on the variety and how they are prepared". Source

From the above example, you will see that the first statement is an original content. While the second is a statement lifted from another source and that is why it is placed in quotation marks and the source cited very close to it.

Finally, i want to say the following
"I have read and understood the Steemit Etiquette on Steemit community and will do my best to embrace them".

I am grateful to @cryptokannon, @focusnow and @ngoenyi for their assistance.

I love the fact that you sourced your picture and gave credit to the owner of the picture, you in this way, demonstrate that you really understand what content etiquette is. And your explanation of plagiarism is just how it is. Please, henceforth, always apply what you have just learnt from this achievement.@micharlu40
