Hello dear stemians, welcome to my achievement 3 post .I am going to be explaining my understanding of plagiarism.
What is plagiarism?

Plagiarism is the representation of another author's language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions as one's own original work.
In other words
plagiarism is the act of passing off another person's thoughts as ones own. Plagiarism comes in different forms. Let's discuss some of them :

            Types of plagiarism

(1)Self -plagiarism:it means reusing passages, phrases or ideas from your own previously submitted work( or post). It will be dishonest to present a piece of information or data as brand new when you have already gotten credit for the work.

(2)Patchwork plagiarism :This type of plagiarism involves copying phrases, passages and ideas from different sources and putting them together to create a new text. It is also known as mosaic plagiarism.

(3)Verbatim plagiarism:As the name implies , it involves directly copying texts from a source and pasting it in your own document without attributing to the real source. If there is need to use an author's exact words, you need to quote the original source.

(4)Global plagiarism:this involves presenting an entire text by someone else as your own work. It can attract severe consequences .

(5)paraphrasing plagiarism. paraphrasing without citing the source is the most common type of plagiarism. Paraphrasing itself is not plagiarism so long as you cite the source. Paraphrasing becomes plagiarism when you read a source and then rewrite its key points as if they were your own ideas.

                How to avoid plagiarism

1.keep track of the sources you consult in your research
2.paraphrase or quote from your sources (add your own ideas)
3.credit the original author in an in text citation citation and reference list.
4.use plagiarism checker before you submit.

In conclusion, I will say one should always avoid plagiarism because it is fraud:
It means stealing someone else's work and it also involves lying i.e presenting another persons work as your own.
Thanks to @cryptokannon for her mentorship and thanks for reading I hope you enjoyed it .
