ACHIEVEMENT 3 BY @LINCOLNBERTRAM TASK: CONTENT ETIQUETTE

in Newcomers' Community2 years ago

INTRODUCTION

Good day guys, today I would love to talk about content etiquette on steemit and of course my focus will be on the subject matter of plagiarism. So what does etiquette really mean and why is it necessary

So from the above definitions we can clearly see that almost every community has its own set of peculiar etiquettes that guide the conducts and behaviors of its members and the steemit community like all others also have theirs. And like I mentioned earlier we are going to zoom in on one of the many etiquettes in the steem community known as PLAGIARISM.

PLAGIARISM

In a lay mans understanding Plagiarism can be simply be seen as copying content from another person and passing it off as your original work by either paraphrasing or direct copy and paste of the original work without giving credit or reference to the real owner of the work.

Having known the definition of plagiarism, I would like to expand on some of the most common types of plagiarism. although I will only do that on the surface not to bore you with all that information but I will duly provide a link where you can get further knowledge on the subject.

COMMON TYPES OF PLAGIARISM

SOURCE

1. Source-based Plagiarism: As the name implies happens when multiple sources are used for a project but are not completely referenced where some may be left out. or it also happens when you reference a source that is incorrect or does not exist.

2. Structure: You should paraphrase information – put it into your own words and sentence style – and cite your source.

3. Self: recycling your old work without coming up with new ideas can still be seen as plagiarism. I mean copying is copying even when its from you.

4. Accidental: this happens when plagiarism is done unintentionally as a result of ignorance what plagiarism really is , or not knowing how to cite and reference sources or a case where you forget a particular citation but the rest of the work is cited

CITATION OF REFERENCES

Moving forward one of the most effective methods of avoiding plagiarism is citation and this can be accomplished in a number of ways.

  1. It is not sufficient to simply note that “text source is Wikipedia”. A link to the specific Wikipedia page where the content came from is required. If numerous sources were used, adding the source after each separate idea is recommended.

  2. Every copy/pasted sentence should be either in quotes “” or formatted using the > markup.

  3. Every paraphrased paragraph, sentence or idea should have a reference as close to it as reasonably possible to indicate its origin.

CONCLUSION

Finally, having considered what plagiarism is and known its types and how it can be avoided. And also taking a look at the steemit community we now see the importance and the need for this etiquette to be held strongly, as this is a community built on originality and innovation and we wouldn't want our work to just fall into the hands of someone with no regards to the laid out etiquette of the steemit community with regards to plagiarism.

On that note I have read and understood the Steemit Etiquette on Steemit Community and will do my best to embrace and live by them and I also urge everyone person on this platform to do so.
