Achievement 3 by @kofimaestro Task: Content Etiquette

Hello fellow steemians,

It's a beautiful day here and a blessed one. I'm honoured to share again with you my knowledge on plagiarism for my Achievement 3 Task.

In my early university days, I was not much informed on the effects of plagiarism and therefore plagiarised a lot until one scientist's works were annulled for plagiarism.
I found difficulties coming up with genuine work initially but with time I was able to produce work with less plagiarism results on turnitin and plagiarismX.

The university I attended only accepted works with plagiarism below 20% and due to my understanding and motivation from the scientist's incident, I was able to produce work with plagiarism results far less than the school's requirement.

Plagiarism is frowned upon in all scientific and formal reports and people have found themselves wanting for such act.

One might wonder what plagiarism is. Plagiarism per the University of Oxford simply means

presenting someone else’s work or ideas as your own, with or without their consent, by incorporating it into your work without full acknowledgement.

What then is considered a plagiarized work?

  1. Verbatim quotation without clear acknowledgment.
Mostly in writings, sentences or phrases are quoted with no alterations to enhance clarity. There is the need to ensure the use of quotation marks for the phrase and the text, with the phrase or sentence source fully cited and referenced in the bibliography.

  2. Cutting and pasting from internet without clear acknowledgment.
The world is now ruled by technology and we are moving steadily towards a generation free of paperwork. Information for various works are now available on the internet and these must be properly cited and included in the list of bibliography. People are fond of citing open source information sites such as wikipedia, googlescholar and co which are not the best way. These sites pool resources from specific sources and it's up to us to identify the specific sources of the ideas to properly cite them.

  3. Paraphrasing
At the start of my undergraduate project work, I wanted to do the lazy-man's job by altering words or combining sentences to make them loom like mine. I realized that was even more tiresome and time-wasting. If one alters words, order, statements or closely follow the structure of another's work, it is plagiarism, if not duly acknowledged and sometimes even when acknowledged. It is a good sign of respect to accept the fact that you have used others work and they deserve your recognition and motivation.

  4. Inaccurate citation
In one presentation in school, a friend found himself wanting when a lecturer decided to look up for one of his references. He created his own work! When citing, it is very important to cite correctly with all the necessary details included in the bibliography list. On steemit, one could use footnote or markdown to indicate a phrase, or passage source. It is also not advisable to cite sources not used in a text just because you are required to give a particular number of references.

  5. Failure to acknowledge others assistance.
Mostly, our ability to produce accurate work depends on contributions from others just as we are introduced to this platform by others, which in my case I will thank @cherub27, @edmund.nef and @pilatejnr. Our friends, families, or religious mates sometimes provide guidance and assistance and deem to be acknowledged.

Hi @kofimaestro,

Nice attempt on your achievement post.

But where you have copied someone's work, be sure to paraphrase it as well as indicate the source you took it from.
