Hello steemites, Beautiful morning to you all. This week is blessed. I just want to give a quick lecture on what hormone is.

INTRODUCTION TO HORMONES

Hormones are chemical substances produced in one part of the body and carried in the blood to distant target sites where they modify the structures and functions of target tissues and organs

The word hormone is derived from the Greek word, ‘hormacin’ which means ‘to excite’.

The circulating blood levels of hormones can therefore give indications of the activities and efficiencies of their secreting glands as well as exposure or response of target organs.

FACTORS AFFECTING THE ACTIONS OF HORMONES

Factors affecting the actions of hormones include:
Rate of synthesis and secretion of hormones
Specific transport systems in the plasma
Presence, nature and concentration of hormone receptors at target sites
Rate of degradation of hormones, usually by the liver and kidneys.

CLASSIFICATION OF HORMONES

Hormones can be classified based on several factors, including chemical nature, water or lipid solubility, location of receptors and mechanism of action.

BASED ON CHEMICAL NATURE

hormones can be classified into: Steroid hormones (estrogens, androgens and progesterone) Amino acid derivatives (epinephrine, norepinephrine and thyroid hormones) Peptide/or protein hormones (insulin, glucagon and calcitonin).

BASED ON SOLUBILITY PROPERTIES

hormones can either be: Lipophilic (steroids, retinoid and calcitriol) Hydrophilic (polypeptides, proteins, glycoproteins and catecholamine) .

Appreciation to my mentor @kingreechy for his great mentorship.
