PLAGIARISM

Plagiarism is copying someone's work or idea without the person's consent or permission or without acknowledging the author or creator of the work or idea. Plagiarism is becoming very rampant in the world that we live in today. People steal and take credit for another person's idea and they think it's ok for them to do so. The rate of this crime seems to be increasing as the days go by. I am going to talk about types of plagiarism.

TYPES OF PLAGIARISM

1. Direct Plagiarism:

This is when someone copies, word for word, another person's idea without acknowledging or giving proper credit to the original owner of the work. It is worst type of plagiarism. This is mostly common in academic writing. It can be likened to copying and pasting.

2. Mosaic Plagiarism:

It involves paraphrasing of someone else's work without giving proper credit to the source. It involves paraphrasing from different sources and interchanging of word groups or using synonyms. This kind of plagiarism is usually difficult to detect.

3. Self Plagiarism:

This involves someone copying his former work. This occurs when one submits his past ideas instead of starting from scratch on the same topic. Many people believe that it is harmless since it is still their idea and the did not copy someone else's. But it is just as damaging as any other type of plagiarism. We could be penalized for having duplicates if we were writing for someone. In this case, the material we have written perviously does not belong to them.

4. Accidental Plagiarism:

This involves unintentionally copying someone's work and passing it off as our own without citing the sources. The fact that it was unintentional doesn't mean that it is not plagiarism. That is why we should always check our work properly and give credit to the source.

HOW TO AVOID PLAGIARISM

  1. We should always check our work properly and give credit to our source.
  2. Credit the original author in an in-text citation and reference list.
  3. Use a plagiarism checker before submitting.

CONCLUSION

It is important that we give credit to and acknowledge all the sources of our work. It is also advised that we make a whole new piece from scratch. That way, it will be our original copy.
