What is plagiarism?

Plagiarism is the act of copying and using a text without acknowledging the source. The text can be a sentence or whole passage. In other words, "plagiarism is the representation of another author's language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions as one's own original work."
Usually, the intention is to get the credit for another person's work.

Why People Plagiarize.

It is quite easy and convenient to copy and paste a text. Here, one does not pass through the stress of solving equations, deriving formulae, composing essays or putting ideas together. It therefore saves time. It makes the plagiarizer appear intelligent, and a genius. Thus, one gets tempted to Plagiarize.
Other times, people plagiarize simply because they are plain lazy, and do not put their brain to good use.

Why Plagiarism should be Avoided.

The plagiarizer denies his brain the opportunity to generate ideas. The brain literary grows cold and gets covered by dust, weeds and cobwebs. We can imagine a smart left unused for years. There is a high possibility that the battery will run down. In the same way, the unused brain becomes "dull" and finds it increasingly difficult to process and churn out ideas, and the plagiarizer only becomes more and more dependent on ready made texts.
On the other hand, plagiarism translates to theft of intellectual property. It robs the original author of the credit. These are some of the reasons one should avoid plagiarism.

How to Avoid plagiarism

One can avoid plagiarism by using his/her own ideas. It is my belief that everyone has ideas that can be brought to the fore.
Another way of avoiding plagiarism is by acknowledging sources. This can be done through the process called citation. Granted, one's own ideas alone may make up a very rich essay or article. Where one needs to add more weight to one's work, content can be "borrowed" provided the source is properly acknowledged. Actually, "coming up with all the information you want to include in your paper is no easy task. With that, there are also a lot of rules you have to follow." Source
There are different ways to cite a work. There borrowed text can be modified, or put in quote. Source. In both cases, a link to the original text is necessary.

A typical example of citation is shown below. The italicized text in quotation marks was copied verbatim from the source:
"coming up with all the information you want to include in your paper is no easy task. With that, there are also a lot of rules you have to follow."

The second citation only shows that the original text has been paraphrased. I.e,
There are different ways to cite a work. There borrowed text can be modified, or put in quote.

I have also provided links to the original text for wider information.
